„There is no doubt in my mind Littorai IS ONE OF THIS COUNTRY’S CROWN JEWEL WINERIES. Proprietor Ted Lemon has the MAGIC TOUCH with both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.“, schrieb bereits vor Jahren ANTONIO GALLONI (jetzt VINOUS, damals Parkers WINE ADVOCATE) über Ted Lemon und sein Weingut LITTORAI. An dieser Begeisterung hat sich wenig geändert, denn zur aktuellen Serie notierte ANTONIO GALLONI: „Ted and Heidi Lemon are among the handful of producers who KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK WITH BOTH CHARDONNAY AND PINOT NOIR in 2014.“

Ted Lemon war der erste Amerikaner der jemals eine Domaine im Burgund geleitet hat, nämlich Domaine Guy Roulot. Diese Tatsache war 1984 der New York Times sogar einen Artikel wert. Jean-Marc Roulot, der damals Ted Lemon engagierte als sein Vater Guy Roulot verstorben war, begründete seine Entscheidung so: „Wir haben jemand gesucht, der intelligent und feinfühlig ist, jemand der die Arbeitsweise meines Vaters verstanden hat.“

Die önologischen Wurzeln im Burgund zeigen auch schon auf, welchen Weinstil Ted Lemon bevorzugt: Eleganz, Finesse, Balance, Terroir, Länge. Er absolvierte mit Erfolg die Universität von Dijon und arbeitete im Burgund auch unter anderem bei so bekannten Domainen wie Georges Roumier, De Villaine und Dujac. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Kalifornien wurde er Winemaker auf Chateau Woltner (Howell Mountain, Napa Valley), zudem war und ist er Berater zahlreicher, bekannter Weingüter (Franciscan, Clos Pegase, Howell Mountain Vineyards etc.).
1992 bereisten Ted Lemon und seine Frau Heidi die gesamte amerikanische Westküste um nach den Weinbergen mit den besten Wachstumsbedingungen für Chardonnay und Pinot Noir Ausschau zu halten. 1993 gründeten sie ihr Weingut Littorai und trafen Vereinbarungen für das Pachten oder den Kauf von Trauben von Weinbergen im Sonoma County und im Mendocino County. Der Name Littorai kommt vom lateinischen Wort „Litora“, das „die Küsten“ bedeutet und weist unmissverständlich darauf hin, wo sich die Weinberge befinden.
2008 stellten sie Ihre eigene Kellerei in der Nähe von Sebastopol im westlichen Sonoma County fertig. Sie betreiben mittlerweile nicht nur Ihr Weingut, sondern eine ganze Landwirtschaft nach den Grundsätzen und dem Kreislauf von Steiner. Auch die Weinberge werden nach den Ideen und Erfahrungen von Ted Lemon naturnah bewirtschaftet, die auf biologisch-dynamischen Gedankengut basieren (ohne Zertifizierung).
Die Weine sollen den Weinberg wiederspiegeln, daher wir auf so ziemlich alles verzichtet was den Wein verfälschen könnte: keine Spritzmittel, keine zugesetzten Hefen, keine kultivierten Bakterien, kein Säurezusatz, keine Enzyme usw.
Obwohl die Weine überhaupt nicht für die Verkoster gemacht sind, werden Sie immer wieder sehr hoch bewertet und von der Presse gefeiert (Decanter, Jancis Robinson, Vinous …). Die Zeitung San Francisco Chronicle wählte Ted Lemon im Jahr 2010 zum WINEMAKER OF THE YEAR. Somit gehört er zu einem illustren Kreis von Weinpersönlichkeiten wie Paul Draper (Ridge), Ehren Jordan (früher Turley, jetzt Failla), Dan Duckhorn, Josh Jensen (Calera) oder Cathy Corison, um nur einige zu nennen, denen diese Anerkennung ebenfalls zu Teil wurde.

Zusammengefasst kann man sagen: Kleine Mengen – großartige, individuelle Weine! Im DECANTER Kalifornien Sonderheft 2016, in einem Artikel über Sonoma, schreibt Autor Jordan Mackay: „Any wine made by Ted Lemon is worth trying, …“. Dem ist nichts hinzu zu fügen. White and yellow orchard fruit, wild flowers, chamomile and almond notes grace the palate in a round, expressive Chardonnay that should drink well pretty much upon release. This is another super-distinctive Chardonnay from Littorai."

CHARDONNAY CHARLES HEINTZ VINEYARD 2013

The Charles Heintz is defined by its enveloping, texture personality and spherical finish. Hints of orchard fruit and chamomile add the closing shades of nuance. In 2013, the malo was early here, so the wine was bottled on the earlier side by Littorai standards."
- 93 Punkte DECANTER: "Ted Lemon makes some of the most restrained, ethereal and elegant wines in the Sonoma Coast, with a commitment to biodynamic viticulture. Lemon oil, chamomile and wet stone characterise this taut, crisp but textural Chardonnay from a site that often produces wines which give a nod to Chablis."

- 93-96 Punkte VINOUS Antonio Galloni: "The 2014 Pinot Noir Hirsch Vineyard is shaping up to be a real beauty. Lavender, violets, cloves and black cherries are some of the signatures. A wine of magnificent perfume, structure and depth, the 2014 is going to need quite a bit of time, but it is superb, even at this early stage. With a little time in the glass, the wine finds more and more finesse. I tasted the Hirsch from barrel, where it had not been racked at the time of my tasting. There is so much to look forward to here."

This is a distinctly Nebbiolo-like Pinot that requires - no, demands - at least a few years in bottle. It will be interesting to see what time brings. 2017-2024."

A host of dark red/purplish fruit, licorice, menthol and dried flowers race across the palate. A Pinot of real pedigree and class, the Haven is super-impressive today. There's not much more to say than that. I tasted the 2014 from tank prior to bottling."

The Haven is likely to always remain a powerful, incisive Pinot. 2016-2027."

There is wonderful depth and density to the fruit, yet the flavors are quite primary, which suggests the 2012 needs time in bottle to develop its full range of aromatics. The future looks very bright. Readers lucky enough to own the Estate Pinot should be thrilled. 2016-2022."

Ted Lemon ist auch als beratender Önologe in Neuseeland tätig. Das Weingut Burn Cottages in Central Otago, dem südlichsten Weinbaugebiet der Welt, wird ebenfalls nach biologisch-dynamisch Grundsätzen, nach den Ideen von Steiner bewirtschaftet:
