- 99 Punkte The Drinks Business, Colin Hay (08/2025): „(Oakville, Napa Valley; Cabernet Sauvignon 80%, Cabernet Franc 6.5%, Petit Verdot 8%, Merlot 105%, and 3% Malbec; 14% alcohol; 100% new French oak; tasted in the Bordeaux offices of Opus One). A wine that has been on la place now since 2004. So lifted, light and aerial that it’s almost gravity-defying. Utterly glorious aromatically, with those lavender and rosemary notes and a subtle touch of violet. Walnut. A hint of sloe and damson. Blueberry. Blackberry. There’s grace and power here but all is in balance. Bold and ample in the mouth, but never quite pushing into the cheeks and with almost a slightly greater vertical range, such that it feels almost lozenge shape. The cedar notes in the mid-palate are divine already and the texture is incredible. We finish on dark chocolate coated violet. Et in arcadia ego!“
- 18++ Punkte Jancis Robinson (01/2026): „They picked pre- and post- the severe early September heat spell. Silacci: One of the most important vintages to show people what we’re up to. The result of our work in the vineyard.’ (2023 is bottled but not yet released.) Following early-winter rains which provided 12 inches more rain than the previous year, the late-winter months were unseasonably dry. Late spring weather was turbulent, but did not impact flowering or fruit set. But extreme temperatures during harvest were challenging. Pre-emptive measures had been taken in advance of this heatwave; selective irrigation was based on specific vine needs and the result was notable freshness in the fruit. Harvest was 24 August to 26 September. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 0.5% Malbec. 20-day skin contact. 18 months in new French oak.
Hint of sweetness and still chewy. Surprisingly savoury. Long. Obviously still very youthful. (JR) 2031-2050.“
- 97 Punkte DECANTER Georgina Hindle (07/2025): „Chocolate, cherry and rose petal aromas on the nose. Very open and alive - this has a great energy from the aromatics alone with soft cedar shavings, vanilla bean and bramble fruit. Juicy and lively, this is full of fun - fruity and concentrated. The tannins are just wonderful, creamy and slightly grippy, extending the flavours vertically. Tons of juicy, succulent fruit - this feels quite modern but still with that flash of sunshine and ripeness. Long lasting with purity and delicacy that make it so enjoyable. A wonderful creation from Michael Silacci. This is not your typical blockbuster at all, this is a darling of a wine. 0.5% Malbec completes the blend. The Opus team chose to pick early and quickly given the heat spikes in 2022, starting with the Merlot on 24th August. Ageing 18 months in French oak.“
- 96 Punkte James Suckling, Jim Gordon (07/2025): : „Generous, with savory aromas of ripe blackcurrants and fresh black cherries and a gentle texture that shows a slight nip of tannin. It is well structured and a bit tight, which is normal for a young cabernet sauvignon-based red that’s a proven collectible. Gives up graphite and pencil shavings, some cocoa and espresso. Full-bodied. Spicy, toasty oak is really showing through right now. Best from 2028.“
- 96 Punkte JANE ANSON, Inside Bordeaux (06/2025): : “Smoky, fragrant and powerful, this has clear intensity with tightly-grained tannins. With coaxing, the body of the wine softens to show chalky tannins, crushed rose petals and violet flowers, impressive delicacy to the aromatics despite the heat of this vintage. Great stuff, once again showing how Opus knows when to take the foot off the pedal, how to sverve towards grace. Picking was exceptionally early, coming on August 24 for the Merlot, as they reacted to the forecast for a big heat dome. Michael Silacci director.“
- 96 Punkte DECANTER Jonathan Cristaldi (08/2025): : „The 2022 Opus One is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec. Winemaker Michael Silacci explained that this vintage marked the earliest harvest ever at Opus One, beginning on 5 September. 'I saw a tsunami of heat coming, and I said we will pick.' Silacci added that the rush to harvest reminded him of a line in the song 'Umbrella' by Jay-Z and Rihanna: 'We fly higher than the weather, in G5's or better... in anticipation...' Given the heat dome that settled over Napa Valley, it seemed a wise decision. Deep ruby in colour with a purple-tawny rim in the glass, the aromas are high-toned with cassis and graphite and a cinnamon-dusted red berry character, nuanced by the woody, spicy aromas of freshly cut rose stems, balanced by fresh rose petals and dark chocolate. On the palate, it’s a creamy wine with a slightly more satin or velvet texture than the 2021 and a touch more sweetness in the berry fruit, balanced by the tannins' textural integrity. The finish is sweetly floral and softened by a lingering salty mineral quality. There’s a real brightness to this wine as it opens in the glass.“
- 95-97 Punkte The Wine Independent, Lisa Perrotti-Brown: „The 2022 Opus One was tasted as a barrel sample. Deep garnet-purple in color, it soars with eager-to-go notes of blackcurrant pastilles, juicy blackberries, and plum preserves leading to hints of crushed rocks, tree bark, and Sichuan pepper. The full-bodied palate is concentrated and impactful, with a firm line of ripe, grainy tannins and bags of black fruit preserves layers, finishing with loads of savory nuances and a compelling lift“
- 94 Punkte JEB DUNNUCK: „The 2022 Opus One shows the sunny, perfumed style of the vintage. Black raspberries, smoked tobacco, incense, and spicy wood notes all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a supple, layered mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and a great finish. I’ve been lucky enough to do many retrospectives of this wine, so I have no doubt it will evolve gracefully for a solid two decades“

| Notizen des Weinguts: | VINTAGE 2o22 Following early-winter rains which provided 12 inches more rain than the previous year, the late-winter months were unseasonably dry. Late spring weather was turbulent, but did not impact flowering or fruit set. Extreme temperatures during harvest made for a delicate dance by our seasoned vineyard team. Pre-emptive measures were taken in advance of this heat wave; ripe fruit was harvested, and selective irrigation was used based on the needs of the vines. The results were astonishing, with marvelous flavors and exceptional freshness. Harvest began on August 24th and was completed by September 26th. Opus One 2022 exudes charm and sophistication from the glass. Primary aromas of blueberry, cassis, and dried rose petals with underlying notes of olive, cigar box, and graphite create a rich and inviting bouquet. On the palate, bright red-fruit flavors, cocoa, and fresh orange peel waltz together into a harmonious and balanced profile. Long and elegant, the finish delivers touches of wet stone, vanilla, and a hint of coffee. Fine-grained tannins and juicy ripeness signal the promise of a long future in the cellar. Opus One was founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, legendary proprietor of Château Mouton Rothschild, and renowned Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. By combining the great winemaking traditions and innovations of both families, the founders’ singular goal was to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley. Opus One, like any great work, arose out of passion. Dedicated to uncompromised quality, Opus One’s sole purpose is to express this vision and passionate spirit for generations to come. |
