Beschreibung

Pōtiki, meaning ‘last born’ in Maori, is blended from a selection of newer plantings and some of our more established blocks on the Martinborough Terrace.  Barrel fermented in 300 litre puncheons with indigenous yeasts, followed by 11 months on lees, brings subtle complexity.

- Notizen des Weinguts: " The 2024 was an exceptional vintage, this Pōtiki Chardonnay delivers on power, depth and freshness.  Aromas of yellow fleshed nectarine, bergamot and apple pudding meld with savoury notes of miso paste and sesame seed cake.  The palate entry has flavours of crushed shell, hints of lanolin and baked apple.  There is great depth of flavour that spreads the whole palate, underpinned with a line of acidity that sweeps through the palate giving freshness on the finish.“

- 97 Punkte JAMES SUCKLING (02/2026): " This single-vineyard chardonnay shows a trendy flinty character that gives it lots of mineral and crushed stone aromas. Medium-bodied with a linear and racy finish of sliced apples, pears and just a hint of wood. Fresh and lively. Drink or hold. Screw cap.“

- 95+ und Outstanding, Cameron Douglas MS: „Varietal, ripe and intriguing bouquet with scents of grapefruit and pith, white fleshed stone fruits, a clay-earth idea and wild forest flowers. There’s a layer of complexity from the use of older barrels and a fine leesy quality adding further depth and bandwidth throughout the bouquet. On the palate a crisp, taut and dry wine, at the beginning of the first development stage with a melding of fruit and spices, lees and mineral. A wine to cellar still with best drinking from early 2027 through 2033+.“

- 94+ Punkte, Halliday Wine Companion, Mike Bennie (03/2026): „There's some fresh fruitiness here, and yet the wine feels shaped with fine, chalky texture and a core of mineral-charged acidity. A sense of restraint and tension, the high refreshment factor also part and parcel. Nectarine, crunchy red apples, cashew, lemongrass and a pretty spice mix. A modern take on the variety, done with aplomb. 2026-2034.“

- 94 Punkte Wine Orbit

- 93 Punkte Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy: "The nose is shy and needs time in the glass to reveal stonefruit, lemon butter and ripe apple. A mouthwateringly vibrant line of acidity give a lift to the palate and there's a powdery phenolic layer contributing a textural finish. A quieter wine that will reward cellaring. Alcohol 13.00%. Drink from 2028-2033."

Im Weinberg: Vineyards: Walnut Ridge, Cambrae, Craighall The Ata Rangi team farm around 32 hectares, spread over 14 vineyards clustered around the village of Martinborough. The sites feature the characteristic Martinborough Terrace profile of 300-600mm of shallow silt-loam overlaying 25-30 metre-deep alluvial gravels. The McCrone and Masters Vineyards are differentiated by a higher percentage of clay within the gravels. Ata Rangi’s home vineyards attained full organic status in 2014. Weeds are managed with under-vine weeding tools, with a combination of cultivation and mowing. Our vineyards’ biodiversity is enhanced by a mixture of native and exotic shelterbelts and inter-row wildflower planting that provide havens for native predatory and beneficial insects. We make compost on site from grape stalks, skins, and yeast lees, mixed with seaweed, forest floor duff and harvested green crops. This mix is utilised in the vineyard to make compost tea for vine health and boost organic matter within the soil. Our dedicated vineyard team does all vine work by hand from pruning in winter through to harvest in autumn. We draw our fruit from a diverse range of vineyards, each managed to suit its soil and clonal diversity. This individualised care, alongside the age of the original vines which are now reaching 40 years old, are both major factors in the quality and consistency of our wines from year to year. Spring is often cool and windy which reduces fruit set, so yields are naturally low. Summer days are consistently warm, though nights are generally cool. Autumn is often long and dry, perfect for hand harvesting.
Im Weinkeller: Winemaking: Hand-picked fruit was whole bunch pressed, with the unsettled juice fully barrel fermented in Burgundy 300L puncheon barrels (20% new) using indigenous yeasts. Partial malolactic. Aged in barrel on lees for 11 months.

Notizen des Weinguts: An almost perfect vintage is rarely shaped by one element alone. It is the quiet accumulation of many parts, layers each held in balance, that creates something truly exceptional. For the 2024 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir wines, those layers aligned with rare precision, creating a vintage of real distinction — one of the finest we have seen. The 2024 Pinot Noir wines will be released on 7 July, 2026 and for Ata Rangi, this is a vintage worth pausing for. One that rewards taking a seat, slowing down, and giving it your full attention. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing these wines at the Ata Rangi Wine Room, through special events in Wellington, Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane and by the glass at a few of our favourite places to sit down, settle in, and enjoy good wine properly. Ata Rangi was founded by Clive Paton in 1980. The first vines were planted on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough Village. Clive’s sister Alison bought an adjoining block soon after and in 1986 Clive’s partner Phyll Pattie bought a share in the business after moving from Marlborough where she had been working as a winemaker. 45 years on, we continue to work diligently to nurture Ata Rangi’s enviable reputation as one of the new world’s most respected pinot noir producers. Today, Alison Paton heads up day-to-day running of the business, with Helen Masters crafting the wines aided by the vital stewardship of vineyard manager Ian Ewar
