Philippe Colin Chassagne Montrachet Les Chaumees Clos Saint Abdon 1er Cru 2022

Notizen des Weinguts: „1.08 acres; « Les Chaumées » vineyard is located at the edge of Chassagne-Montrachet, bordering Saint-Aubin. It is the highest positioned vineyard directly above the Premier Cru « Les Vergers » and « Les Chenevottes ». « Clos Saint-Abdon » refers to this big patch of land that used to be surrounded by a wall, inside Les Chaumées. Shallow soils have a higher limestone content than clay, imparting a bracing minerality. The largest portion is 50 years old. « Les Chaumées » is a consistent, very elegant, mineral-driven wine. Flint and smoke on the nose segue to a structured palate that showcases notes of vibrant citrus fruit and rounded edges that taper off into a focused, lingering finish. Yo be served at 10-12°C (50-54°F). Ageing potential: 5-7 years.“

- 90-93 Punkte BURGHOUND, Allen Meadows: “Tasting note: Here too moderate wood influence can be found on the aromas of more floral-suffused white peach, pear and petrol scents. The delicious middleweight flavors possess a bit more size and weight while displaying notably better depth and impressive length where the wood resurfaces. This is mildly woody at present but promising nonetheless. 2029+.“

 „Producer note: There are big changes at this domaine as Philippe Colin has ceded a large part of the domaine to his son Simon (see immediately below for the details) in much the same way that his father Michel did when he split the domaine between he and his brother Bruno (see also above). Briefly though, Simon will be taking over roughly two-thirds of the vines, but Philippe will retain the more prestigious white vineyards, which is again exactly what Michel did some years ago. As is usually the case, Philippe was again at his domaine in South Africa preparing for the harvest. His assistant Emmanuel presided over the tasting and briefly noted that the 2022 "harvest began on the 26th of August and we brought in ripe and clean fruit with good yields, which is to say around 55 hl/ha in white and about 47 in red. In both cases, potential alcohols averaged right at 13% with average acidities. While the wines in their élevage stage, I thought that they might wind up being a bit too ripe but in fact, they're really quite fresh with excellent terroir transparency. We are super-happy with the quality in both colors and we would be happy to sign up for this level of excellence any time." Emmanuel noted that the whites were raised in 500 L barrels rather than the standard 228 L casks. - 90-93 Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy: „Clear pale colour, a little touch of sulphur, but some energy to the fruit nonetheless. Softer pears playing with crisper apples on the palate, a slight vanilla from the wood, which always integrates well chez Philippe Colin. There is enough acidity to drive the length of this wine. Drink from 2027-2033.“

- Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy über Philippe Colin: „Philippe Colin set up in modern premises in the industrial zone of Chassagne with his share of the Colin-Deleger vineyards, along with others which he has acquired or rents. Philippe is fortunate to get two bites at the Puligny Demoiselles cherry – his own small plot which has just been replanted, and a share of the fruit from the mature plot belonging to the SCI St-Abdon.

The Philippe Colin style is for elegance and subtlety ahead of overt weight and power. He has moved to using mostly larger barrels, without a significant proportion of new wood. The wines are closed using corks with a layer of wax above the cork but below the top of the bottle, then covered with a standard capsule.

From the 2021 vintage Philippe has handed over a number of vineyards to his son, Simon, who now makes them under his own label. Philippe also migrates from time to time to South Africa where he purchased a winery, Topiary, in Franschhoek in 2014.“,

Part of the vineyard is known as Clos de la Truffiere (Michel Niellon, Jouard). This is an excellent source for vibrant and relatively complex white Chassagne, grown on light stony soil with a noticeable slope. Other sources include Jean-Noel Gagnard and Blair Pethel (Domaine Dublere).“
