Chateau Batailley
Die Geschichte von Chateau Batailley geht zurück ins 15 Jahrhundert, nach mehreren Besitzerwechseln wurde es bei der Bordeaux-Klassifizierung 1855 als Cinquieme Cru Classe eingestuft.
1932 kauften die Brüder Francis und Marcel Borie das Gut und beschlossen 1939 den Besitz aufzuteilen. Francis gründete so Chateau Haut-Batailley, Marcel übernahm den größeren Teil unter dem bestehenden Namen Chateau Batailley.
Heute gehört Chateau Batailley der Familie Casteja. Seine Weinberge erstrecken sich über 60 Hektar mit Kiesböden aus der Günz-Zeit, Silizium und Sand, bestockt mit Cabernet Sauvignon (70 %), Merlot (25 %), Cabernet Franc (3 %) und Petit Verdot (2 %). Das Durchschnittsalter der Reben beträgt 40 Jahre, die Pflanzdichte 8.500 Reben pro Hektar.
Die Parzellen werden bei perfekter Reife gelesen und die Trauben bevor sie in den Keller gelangen zweimal aussortiert. Die alkoholische Gärung findet in thermoregulierten Edelstahltank bei 24-26° C statt, danach wird der Wein bei 30-32° C auf den Traubenschalen belassen, um die Tannine zu verfeinern. Nach der malolaktischen Gärung im Holz reift der Wein für ca. 12 Monate in Barriques aus französischer Eiche, wovon 60 % neu und 40 % zum zweiten mal belegt sind.
Sechs Monate vor der Abfüllung wird mit Eiweiß geklärt. Für die Assemblage der Weine werden die einzelnen Gebinde alle drei bis vier Monate verkostet und kategorisert.
- Robert Parkers WINE ADVOCATE, Neal Martin (6/2017): „When I commenced my professional wine career in the 1990s, Château Batailley was perceived as a rather fusty and old-fashioned Grand Cru Classé that appeared, to all intents and purposes, content not to move with the times. (…) Batailley appeared unchanged since the turn of the century. For some, including myself, that was always part of its charm. Its wines were always some of the—I don’t want to use the word cheapest here—least expensive in blue-blooded Pauillac. Consequently, it never gained kudos and its reputation lagged a few steps behind its competitors.
That began to change after the millennium. After the passing of proprietor Emile Castèja in 2001, his son Philippe Castèja was intent upon increasing both the quality and reputation of Batailley. Recognizing that he could not do it alone, he assiduously hired the late Denis Dubourdieu as consultant. Henceforth, the wines gained more consistency. There was more precision and purity, a sense of hitherto undiscovered sophistication. Unfortunately, public perception takes longer to change, lags behind progress. Even after some 15 years, I do not think recent vintages are afforded the respect they deserve and, as a result, prices have remained modest vis-à-vis other classified growths. That will change, while the recent and, I must say, long overdue introduction of a second label will meliorate the wine further.“
