- 96 Punkte JEB DUNNUCK: „In the same mold, the 2016 Syrah Concrete Mama (there’s 5% Viognier) offers incredible purity, with the Rocks funk pushed all the way into the background by thrilling pure fruit. Smoked black fruits, ground pepper, forest floor, and subtle floral notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied Syrah that shines for its seamless texture and incredible elegance.“

- Robert Parkers WINE ADVOCATE, Anthony Mueller: „A Côte-Rôtie style blend of 95% Syrah co-fermented with 5% Viognier from the River Rock vineyard, the 2016 Syrah Concrete Mama hits the mark with a broad and beautiful nose of black pepper, juicy dark fruits and soft mineral essence. Full-bodied on the palate, with an intensely focused and dusty expression, the wine coats the mouth with flavors of mocha, a delicate smokiness and subtle jerky notes and shows a balanced and complex structure across the mid-palate. Flavors of blackberry juice, fresh cracked pepper and elegant red and purple flowers linger in the mouth on the clean and correct finish. This is a beautiful wine. Yum! 197 cases made.“

- VINOUS, Stephen Tanzer: „(made from a Tablas Creek clone planted in the same 2005 vineyard in The Rocks as the Grenache; aged in 62% new 600-liter barrels made by Boutes and Stockinger): Bright ruby-red. Sexy, slightly roasted aromas of black raspberry, bitter chocolate, licorice and sweet oak convey lovely aromatic lift (no doubt partly due to the 5% co-fermented Viognier). At once juicy and densely packed, with its intense dark berry, dark chocolate and spice flavors showing excellent lift (the pH here is 3.8, vs. 3.9 for the Grenache). Finishes with very suave tannins and virtually no greenness.“

- INTERNATIONAL WINEREPORT: „The 2016 ‘Concrete Mama’ by the talented Ali Mayfield and is sourced from the River Rock Vineyard in the Walla Walla Rocks AVA. On the nose there is a lighter stony character with red cherry candy, orange zest and pomegranate seed aromatics that build in the glass. The palate is soft and round, as delicate red fruits mingle with lighter wet stone and earthy tones. Delicious now, this will drink well for the next seven plus years.“

- 94 Punkte WASHINGTON WINE BLOG: "The ‘Concrete Mama’ Syrah is another seriously good release by The Walls and new consulting winemaker Todd Alexander. The wine shows better aromatic and flavor range than the other wines in this new set of releases. Sourced from the ‘River Rock Vineyard’ in the Rocks Disrtrict of Milton-Freewater, the ‘Concrete Mama’ opens with layers of bacon fat, green olive tapenade and a deep core of dark fruits with stony undertones that all take shape in the glass. The palate is silky smooth, showing off its plush mouthfeel and voluptuous texture. Layers of Hoisin sauce and smoked brisket combine with coffee grounds and tar, with stony undertones that all make this remarkable wine truly sing. Highly enjoyable in its youth with its soft texture, this marvelous new release will enjoy another decade in the cellar. Drink 2020-2028. (94)"

- Vino Social: Top 10 Wines of the 2018 Wine Bloggers Conference: “When your friends see that you have a bottle of wine from The Walls in your hand, they get even more friendly! This Walla Walla Valley wine was the highlight of our evening during the closing dinner.“

- 95 Punkte Evolution of Wine: "The Walls is a reference to the local penitentiary walls that warn the surrounding residents of the lack of life that is available with one misguided decision made. The stone fortress is a daily reminder that perspective varies greatly pending which side of the wall you reside. The Syrah, harvested from the revered River Rocks Vineyard in the Rocks District, is co-fermented in "concrete walls" with the Viognier skins to provide tannins, intensity of color, floral aromatics, and a superior gracefully textured expression on the palate. Aged in French barrels (half new/ half seasoned) I was thankful that this intense wine had 5 years behind it to allow youthful exuberance an opportunity to soften just enough to produce a seamless, powerful but velvetlike, and near perfect glass to be shared. It's abundance of well woven red berries, cherries, black olives, and white pepper created a table full of admirers last night as the wine continued to evolve over the entire evening.“

Notizen des Weinguts: "This wine offers up classic Rocks District AVA markers, such as olive tapenade, a velvety texture and salinity. Red currants, toasted oak and cocoa flavors mingle with a wonderful savory character." Vintage: 2016 was a warm vintage but not as warm as 2015, providing loads of structure to these wines, helping them age well. Favourite recipe for this wine: We recommend pairing this wine with seared duck breast and cherry compote.
