Tatomer Pinot Noir Santa Barbara 2020

Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice and mocha all race out of the glass. This rich, heady Pinot delivers the goods, then some. Vineyard sites are Kick-on and Drum Canyon. 2023-2034.
I was blown away by the wines I tasted with Grahama Tatomer this year. Tatomer has thoughtfully expanded his range over the last few years. At the same time, he has become more selective about what goes into the vineyard designate whites, choosing to use the rest for his entry-level Hinter der Mauer, which is easily one of the very finest values in all of Santa Barbara. Tatomer has acquired a reputation as a Riesling specialist in California, indeed he is one of the variety’s foremost exponents, but he is every bit as skilled with Pinot Noir. These new releases are superb across the board.“

- Notizen von Graham Tatomer: „A blend of amazing Pinot Noir vineyards from within and around the Sta. Rita Hills. These vines are carefully tended to maximize flavor. Once harvested the grapes are all fermented in small lots with an emphasis on body and aroma. The goal has always been to vastly over deliver with this wine. The template I am going for is something like Bachelet Côte des Nuits Village, or Simone Bize Savigny les Beaune.“

Sie mögen Pinot Noir?
Dann sollten sie unbedingt die Pinots von Graham Tatomer probieren. Ich liebe Grahams Pinots!
Bei den Pinot Noirs ist es Graham Tatomers Ziel, den Fokus auf die Aromen zu legen und den allzu fruchtigen Charakter zu reduzieren. Hierzu wird etwas früher als üblich gelesen. 30-50% der Trauben werden mit den Rappen vergoren, ein vorsichtiger Punch Down erfolgt nur einmal am Tag. Nach etwa zwei Wochen werden die Trauben dann gepresst und in Fässer (großteils neutrale Barriques, nur 15 % neues Holz) gelegt. Die malolaktische Gärung findet bestenfalls im späten Frühling statt. Bevor die Rotweine unfiltriert abgefüllt werden, werden sie im Sommer noch einmal abgezogen.

BEWERTUNG FÜR DEN JAHRGANG 2021:
Im renommierten DECANTER Magazin (09/2023) hat der 2021er TATOMER PINOT NOIR SANTA BARBARA eine Verkostung amerikanischer Pinots gewonnen und wurde mit 95 Punkten bewertet. Verkostet wurden Pinot Noirs aus Nord- und Südamerika, von den drei Master of Wine Anne Krebiehl MW, Justin Knock MW und Dirceau Vianna Junior MW:
„Graham Tatomer is known more for his Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners (he spent four years with Emmerich Knoll in Austria’s Wachau before founding his winery in 2008), but aims for similar tension and energy in his Pinot Noirs. Fruit for this comes from a selection of vineyards located across Santa Barbara, fermented with 50% whole clusters and matured for 12 months in French oak, 10% new.
Anne Krebiehl MW: Toasty oak, with lovely structure, crunch and an edge of tobacco. The palate is crunchy, bright, vivid, fresh, beautiful and nuanced.
Justin Knock MW: Bingo, on point. Pale, pure, slatey fresh, balanced, lively, layered, full of finesse and class.
Dirceu Vianna Junior MW: Youthful and vibrant with intense notes of forest fruits, a touch herbal and with a hint of sweet spice. On the palate it is harmonious and combines wonderful vibrancy of fruit with a sophisticated silky structure that leads to a persistent finish. Pure, precise and delicious. Drinking Window: 2023 – 2035.“
