- 90-92 Punkte, BURGHOUND, Allen Meadows: “ Moderate reduction is enough to overshadow the underlying fruit though there is both good freshness and vibrancy to the caressing but attractively punchy and textured flavors that possess solid concentration, all wrapped in a refreshingly dry finale. This could use better depth, but the potential appears to be present such that more can develop with a few years of bottle aging. Drink: 2026+“

Producer note: Philippe Colin, who runs this 11.5 ha domaine and is the brother of Bruno (see above), was again at his domaine in South Africa preparing for the harvest. His assistant Emmanuel presided over the tasting and noted that 2020 was "precocious in all aspects including the harvest which began on the 24th of August and continued through to the 1st of September. Yields were pretty much normal and in both colors with potential alcohols that ranged from 13 to 14%. The whites are much like those of 2017 though the reds seem to defy easy categorization." He further noted that big changes were coming as Philippe's son Simon will be taking over roughly two-thirds of the vines but keeping the more prestigious white vineyards in much the same way that Philippe's father Michel did when he partially retired. I will have more details as they are announced. Notizen des Weinguts: Vineyards: « Les Chaumées » vineyard is located at the edge of Chassagne-Montrachet, bordering Saint-Aubin. It is the highest positioned vineyard directly above the Premier Cru « Les Vergers » and « Les Chenevottes ». « Clos Saint-Abdon » refers to this big patch of land that used to be surrounded by a wall, inside Les Chaumées. Shallow soils have a higher limestone content than clay, imparting a bracing minerality. The largest portion is 50 years old. Tasting notes: « Les Chaumées » is a consistent, very elegant, mineral-driven wine. Flint and smoke on the nose segue to a structured palate that showcases notes of vibrant citrus fruit and rounded edges that taper off into a focused, lingering finish. Yo be served at 10-12°C. Ageing potential: 5-7 years.
