Deep ruby/purple, with stunning crème de cassis and blackberry fruits as well as kaleidoscope-like notes of graphite, scorched earth, smoke, violets, and spring flowers, it offers full-bodied richness yet stays light on its feet, graceful, and almost ethereal on the palate, with integrated acidity and building yet seamless tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon really sings at this point, and there's almost a Médoc-like regalness here. Reminding me of a slightly more elegant 2005 (it also has similarities to the 2016), it will benefit from 4-6 years in the cellar and keep for 30+ years.“

Tannins are still covered in silk but there is a slate texture alongside that gives grain, flexibility and bounce. Extremely successful, one to put away for a few more years but then share widely. Consultant Michel Rolland, harvest September 20 to October 12. Hold 4 years of decant 6 hours.“

-18,5 Punkte WEINWISSER: „Sattes Granat mit rubinroten Reflexen. Ein berauschendes rot-blaubeeriges Bouquet mit reifen Him- und Heidelbeeren. Im zweiten Ansatz Veilchen, Kokos und dunkle Edelhölzer. Am festen Gaumen mit unbändiger Kraft und engmaschigem Tanningerüst ausgestattet. Im gebündelten Finale eine Explosion von Brombeeren und Brasiltabak. Dieses Jahr in der Verfolgergruppe von Haut-Bailly und SHL. Jetzt schon sehr betörend, kann mit Reife auf die 19/20 gehen. 2025-2040.“

- 96+ Punkte Robert Parkers WINE ADVOCATE, Lisa Perrotti-Brown: „The 2018 Pape Clement is a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, aged for approximately 18 months in oak barriques, 60% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it rolls out of the glass with vibrant notes of crushed black cherries, stewed black plums and black raspberries, followed by suggestions of violets, star anise, cardamom and camphor with a waft of iron ore. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers exhilarating energy, offering crunchy black berry and exotic spice layers with a solid frame of ripe, grainy tannins and loads of freshness, finishing long and mineral tinged. Still very primary, it will need a good 5 years in bottle to deliver that next-level experience and will drink over the next 30+ years.“

The 2018 is going to be a fascinating wine to follow in the cellar over the next several decades. The purity of the flavors is just striking.“

There's still a bit of Venice Beach in its muscles but it has let some juice in between the firm tannins and it's all the better for it. There are ripples of freshness here too, with lots of fleshy fruit, and a slatey mineral finish that sits against chocolate and smoked cedar notes. It's clearly been carefully extracted yet still has the serious ageing ability and sense of confidence that is the signature of the property. 37hl/ha yield in 2018. Two-thirds new oak. Drinking Window 2026 – 2042“


Die Geschichte des Weinguts beginnt bereits im 13. Jahrhundert. 1299 wurde das Weingut von Gaillard de Goth und dessen Familie erworben. Sein Bruder Bertrand de Goth war damals Erz-Bischof von Bordeaux. 1305 wurde dieser zum Papst ernannt, also Pape Clement V. Als 1306 sein Bruder Gaillard verstarb, übernahm er das Weingut. Er liebte den Weinbau und förderte ihn, nicht nur rund um Bordeaux, auch an der Rhone (Chateauneuf-du-Pape).
Die jüngere Geschichte des Gutes beginnt in den 1980er Jahren mit der Übernahme durch den umtriebigen Unternehmer Bernard Magrez. Er verschrieb sich der Spitzenqualität, engagierte Michel Rolland, investierte in Weinberge und Keller. 2003 wurde ein neuer Barriquekeller errichtet. 2007 renovierte man die anderen Teil des Kellers. Der 2009er Pape Clement blanc und kurz danach der 2010er Pape Clement rouge wurden erstmals mit 100 Punkten von Robert Parker bewertet. Das Weingut gibt dies als Meilensteine auf der Website an.
Vor einigen Jahren waren die Weine noch sehr opulent. Jedoch hat sich Pape Clement in den letzten Jahren weiter entwickelt. Das gilt auch für andere Weingüter von Bernard Magrez wie Chateau La Tour Carnet, Chateau Fombrauge. Clos Haut Peyraguey oder Chateau Les Grands Chenes.

- Höchstnote 20 RENE GABRIEL!: "50 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 47 % Merlot, 2 % Petit Verdot, 1 % Cabernet Franc. Extrem dunkles Purpur mit lila und violetten Reflexen. Extrem dunkelbeerig mit vielen Rauchnuancen, Lakritze, dunklen Edelhölzer, Guinness-Biermalz und Black Currant im ersten Ansatz. Nach ein paar Minuten kommt eine feine Zimtnuance zum Tragen, Heidelbeerenmark und Tahiti-Vanilleschote. Das Aromenpaket ist in sich gekehrt und bleibt noch etwas im Innern obwohl der Wein gleichfalls auch verschwenderische Ansätze zeigt. Ausgeglichene, royale Adstringenz aufweisend, cremiges Extrakt mit massiver, aber nicht überladener Konzentration, bleibt blaubeerig und hat in sich eine nicht erklärbare Faszination. Trotz der absolut modernen Vinifikation bleibt er irgendwie klassisch. Nach dem Spucken blieb er minutenlang im Gaumen zurück. Und mir blieb dabei förmlich die Spucke weg. Das war mein grösster Pape-Clément als Jungweinprobe. Fünf Mal verkostet. Er ist momentan der beste Pessac-Léognan. Mit der Gefahr, dass ihn Haut-Brion oder Mission einmal ein- möglicherweise überholen werden. Aber vor 20 Jahren wird dies nicht der Fall sein!"

Everything is dialed up to the limit here but then dialed in on the palate. Such impressive depth and suave, ripe, fluid tannins that deliver impressive length. Great wine. Such polish. Superb. Dark and beautifully resonant, it captures all the natural radiance of the year in the Pape Clément style. Super-ripe black cherry, plum, mocha, chocolate, new leather and spice effortlessly fill out the wine's ample frame. Soft contours and an open-knit, inviting personality are just two of the reasons the Pape Clément is going to be virtually impossible to resist, even in the early going. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Tasted two times."
- 96 Punkte Robert Parkers WINE ADVOCATE, Lisa Perrotti-Brown: "The 2015 Pape Clement is blended of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, matured in 80% new and 20% one-year-old French oak barrels for 18 months. Medium to deep garnet-purple, it opens with profound notes of crushed red and black currants, black cherries and cassis with touches of mocha, baking spices, menthol and lavender plus a hint of new leather. Medium-bodied, firm and concentrated with tons of tightly wound black fruit and earth layers, it has a grainy frame and refreshing lift on the long finish."

- 94 Punkte Robert Parkers WINE ADVOCATE, Neal Martin: "The 2014 Pape Clement has quite a potent bouquet with lavish red cherry, kirsch, iodine and pastille-like scents, the oak probably needing another couple of years to fully integrate. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity, quite refined and focused with appreciable tension towards the finish that comes laden with succulent, tobacco-infused blackberry fruit. This is a sumptuous and yet refined Pape-Clement that demonstrated the most matière or substance out of all the Pessac-Léognan 2014s that I tasted, except for the Haut-Brion. It is certainly a wine destined for a long future."

It just builds in the mouth towards a very confidence, sophisticated, tensile finish with graphite lingering on the aftertaste. Superb. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting."

Parfümiertes Bouquet, wunderschöne Röstnote, welche aber deutlich von den Barriques her stammen, ein Hauch Amarena, Brotkruste, reife Pflaumen, er hat aber auch eine schöne, frische Note darin. Im Gaumen erstaunlich elegant, die Tannine sind fondiert, will heissen angerundet, eine traumhafte Kokossüsse geht vom Extrakt aus. Kein Monster - aber halt doch sehr modern vinifiziert. Hat mir Spass bereitet und zeigt auch deutlich auf, dass das Pessac, der Region Léognan in diesem Jahr haushoch überlegen ist."

Checking in as a blend of 58% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance Petit Verdot, aged in 60% new French oak, its deep purple color is followed by a layered, ripe, sexy wine that has loads of currants, blackberries, smoke tobacco, and forest floor aromas and flavors, with just a touch of chocolaty oak. Silky and incredibly pure on the palate, with impeccable balance and sweet, yet present tannin, it’s already impossible to resist, yet is going to deliver the goods for another 20-25 years. It’s a beauty!"

Almost languid, but a fine thread of verbena maintains the tension while allowing the hedonistic side to strut its stuff. Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and Muscadelle. Drink now through 2020."

Jahrhundert in der Gemeinde Saint Christoly du Medoc. Die 38 Hektar sind zu 70% mit Merlot, zu 29% mit Cabernet Sauvignon und zu 1%  mit Cabernet Franc bestockt, das Durchschnittsalter der Reben beträgt ca. 40 Jahre.
