Lieber Max Mustermann,

im Rahmen der En-Primeur Verkostung des Jahrgangs 2018 auf CHATEAU PONTET CANET, war beim Gang durch den Keller gut zu erkennen, dass es eine sehr kleine Ernte gewesen sein muss. Der Keller war ziemlich leer. Wie sich herausstellte konnten tatsächlich nur ein Drittel einer normalen Ernte produziert werden, denn ein großer Teil viel dem Mehltau zum Opfer. Aber wie das eben so ist, wenn nur wenige Trauben am Rebstock hängen, wird es eben richtig gut. Und wenn es richtig gut ist und es wenig gibt, ist es entsprechend gesucht.

- 98 Punkte Robert Parkers WINE ADVOCATE, Lisa Perroti-Brown: "The 2018 Pontet-Canet is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. It was aged in 55% oak barriques and 45% amphorae. Deep garnet-purple colored, it explodes from the glass with an atomic perfume of raspberry pie, blackcurrant pastilles, rose oil and Chinese five spice, giving way to suggestions of cinnamon stick, dusty soil, pencil lead and underbrush. The rich, seductive, full-bodied palate is a hedonist's dream, delivering layer-upon-layer of black and red berry preserves with loads of fragrant accents, a beautifully firm yet plush texture and tons of freshness, finishing long with a whole firework display of exotic spices. This is pretty much out-of-the-gate delicious, but it has the backbone to evolve over three decades or more. 2023-2053."

It is still young, with a powerful structure and ripe, vibrant black-currant fruits. The wine needs plenty of aging. Drink from 2028. Organic and biodynamic."

- 98 Punkte VINOUS, Antonio Galloni: "When I tasted the 2018 Pontet-Canet in barrel I described it as a "freak of nature." The 2018 is more than that, it is a freak of nature. Made from yields of just ten hectoliters per hectare, the 2018 possesses off the charts richness, phenomenal balance and head-spinning intensity. Crushed red berries, flowers, mint, cedar and rose petal saturate the palate in a Pauillac of breath-taking richness. The silkiest of tannins frame the phenomenally pure, long finish. This is a towering achievement from the Tesseron family and former Technical Director Jean-Michel Comme, who together spearheaded biodynamic farming in Bordeaux and built the present-day estate around a philosophy of non-interventionalist winemaking. In 2018, grapes were crushed solely by hand. Because of the tiny yields, the entire production was vinified in Pontet-Canet's new smaller concrete vats. All winemaking was done manually, without the aid of external temperature control or electricity. Put in another way, if Lalou Bize-Leroy made Bordeaux, it would taste like this. 2028-2058."

Hauch von Feigen und Nougat, kandierte Veilchen und feine Edelholznuancen im Hintergrund, sehr vielschichtiges Bukett. Stoffig und komplex, süße Waldbeerenfrucht, feiner Nougat, reife, seidige, aber tragende Tannine, verfügt über eine eindrucksvolle Länge und Würze, ein facettenreicher Begleiter bei Tisch. (2020 - 2060)"

- 96 Punkte DECANTER, Jane Anson: ”The concentration that comes from having yields of 12hl/ha is extremely clear - it makes it feel very Pauillac, again resembling as at Latour, a 2010 style in terms of its backbone and sense of hunkering down.
The fruit quality is dark and knitted, with a creamy texture if you give it a minute to settle, an obvious tannic structure and a menthol finish that lets in some juice, bramble and hedgerow pleasures. It’s clearly impressive, although I get just the slightest touch of over-concentration with hints of prune on the finish.
The small yields meant the entire process, from destemming to sorting, was done by hand (last year around 30% of the crop was treated in this way), then fermented in small 40L cement vats that had seen their first service for just part of the crop in 2017. There was huge amounts of hard work and stress to ensure that no dried grapes made it through, with no pumping over and only soft manual punch down to control extraction.
This is 100% 1st wine, same as it has been here for the past three years. 55% will be aged in new oak barrel, 45% in amphoras. Drinking Window 2026 – 2040"

- 20 Punkte Rene Gabriels BORDEAUX TOTAL, Andre Kunz: "Kunz Fassprobe 19: Konzentriertes, gut opulentes, cremiges, komplexes Bouquet, Brombeergelee, Damassinepflaumen, Dörrfrüchte, Schwarztee, Korinthen, Lakritze, fein Caramel, Kandis, Minze. Dichtverwobener, vielschichtiger, cremiger, fein opulenter, burgundischer Gaumen mit fein konzentrierter, cremiger Struktur, sehr viel feinem Tannin, süsser, super Aromatik, kräftiger, feiner Frucht, sehr langer, aromatischer, frischer Abgang mit vielen Rückaromen. Ein völlig anderer Stil als die anderen grossen Weine vom Médoc, aber ein grossartiger Wein."

- 97+ Punkte JEB DUNNUCK: "An unevolved, almost primordial 2018, the 2018 Château Pontet Canet sports a dense purple hue as well as loads of blue and black fruits, damp earth, tobacco, candied violets, and graphite-laced aromas and flavors. With full-bodied richness, serious mid-palate depth, and building tannins, it's mostly potential at this point, but it's a beautiful wine in the making. A decade of bottle age is going to be required, though, so it's not for those seeking instant gratification. 2029-2069."

- 98 Punkte JAMES SUCKLING: “A complex nose of blueberries, elderberries, dried fruit, spice and dark chocolate. It’s full-bodied with a harmonious, balanced texture. The tannins are still firm and powerful, but there’s balance and finesse to the whole thing. Tight and reserved, yet long and energetic. The tannins open slowly. Dusty texture. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try after 2024."

- 20 Punkte VINUM: "Besitzt diese unglaubliche Komplexität, Struktur und Tiefe, mit denen uns dieses Gut in den letzten Jahren verwöhnt hat, die schon fast transzendente Art, aber auch nie gekannte, schon fast überschwängliche Fruchtigkeit und Frische. Ein Drittel einer normalen Ernte, doch einmal mehr ein Wein, der sich jeder Bewertung entzieht. 2025-2050."

- 19 Punkte WEINWISSER: "Tiefes Purpur mit schwarzer undurchlässiger Mitte und zartem rubinrotem Rand. Ein opulentes Bouquet nach warmen Backpflaumen, Heidelbeerkompott und Kirschlikör. Im zweiten Ansatz ein voller Strauss Bakkarat-Rosen, belgische Nougatpralinen und Lakritze. Am cremigen Gaumen mit einer kaschmirartigen Textur, betörender (fein körniger) Extraktsüße und engmaschigem Tanningerüst gepaart mit royaler Adstringenz.Im energiegeladenen Finale ein Korb mit schwarzen Johannisbeeren, parfümierter Pfeifentabak und dunkle Mineralik. Minutenlanges Rückaroma, ein Meditationswein – leider sehr limitiert dieses Jahr! Trinkfenster nach hinten verschoben."

- VINUM (11/2020), Artikel „Winzerlegende Alfred Tesseron – Ein Leben mit der Natur“, Barbara Schröder: „Selbst im klimatisch schwierigen Jahr 2018 krebste Alfred Tesseron nicht zurück und akzeptierte den Verlust von zwei Dritteln der Ernte. «Wir haben an Gewissheit gewonnen und nahmen das in Kauf. Die Ernte 2018 ist bescheiden, aber von hervorragender Qualität.“ 

VINUM, Barbara Schroeder: „«Wenn dir Mouton zu teuer ist, schau dir Pontet-Canet an, das gleich danebenliegt», bedeutete mir Ende der 1980er Jahre ein Bordelaiser Weinhändler, der es wissen musste. Bereits bei meinem ersten Streifzug durch die Reben wurde mir klar, dass dieses ausgedehnte Gut von 81 Hektar über ausgezeichnete Böden verfügt. Doch die Weine begeisterten mich gar nicht. Heute hat sich das krass geändert. Seit über zehn Jahren gehört Pontet-Canet (nicht nur für mich) zu den besten Weinen der Welt.“

PYM-RAE: Tesseron Estate im Napa Valley
Anfang 2016 kaufte die Familie Tesseron dieses Weingut hoch oben am Mount Veeder im kalifornischen Napa Valley vom legendären Hollywood Start Robin Williams. Dieser hat den Weinberg gut 30 Jahre davor anlegen lassen und benannte das Gut nach den mittleren Namen seiner ersten beiden Kinder: Pym Rae. Die biodynamische Arbeitsweise wurde nach der Übernahme durch die Familie Tesseron auch sofort eingeführt. Das Weingut wird geleitet von Thomas Comme, das ist der Sohn von Jean-Michel Comme, dem langjährigen technischen Direktor auf Chateau Pontet Canet. Der etwa 8 ha Weinberg ist mit 75 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 18 % Merlot und 7 % Cabernet Franc bepflanzt. Die Produktion ist also ohnehin schon recht klein und davon gehen auch nur 5000 Flaschen in den Export, der Löwenanteil bleibt in den USA. Ich habe den Wein im Rahmen einer der En-Primeur Verkostungen in den letzten Jahren probieren können und war sehr begeistert.

- 98 Punkte JAMES SUCKLING: “This is the debut vintage of this wine from the esteemed Bordeaux owner, Alfred Tesseron, who bought the property in the Napa mountains in 2016. Aromas of plums, wet earth, fresh herbs and tobacco. Some green olives. Turns to blueberries and blackberries. Full-bodied, yet reserved and layered with chocolate, walnuts and plums. Firm yet polished tannins give a framed sense to the wine. Savory. Racy and beautifully structured, it’s extremely drinkable already. Real wine.”
- 97 Punkte Robert Parkers WINE ADVOCATE, Lisa Perrotti-Brown: “A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Pym-Rae displays a deep garnet-purple color and reveals wonderfully fragrant notes of candied violets, wilted roses, damp soil and black tea over a core of red and black currants, black cherries and warm blackberries plus touches of cigar box and camphor. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is evocatively singular, offering that rock-solid structure of mountain fruit, yet these are wonderfully ripe, silt-like tannins that beautifully support the elegant red and black fruit layers, finishing very long and very perfumed. 2020-2048.
This is the first vintage off this estate following the purchase of the old Robin Williams vineyard and house by Chateau Pontet-Canet proprietor Alfred Tesseron back in 2016. The estate includes just under 20 acres of mature Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), Merlot (18%) and Cabernet Franc (7%) vines, planted in 1990. Now officially dubbed “Pym-Rae,” in respect for the original name given to the vineyard by Robin Williams (Pym and Rae are the middle names of two of Williams’s children), the site is perched at an average altitude of 1,500 feet (500 meters) on Mount Veeder. This first vintage off this vineyard is nothing like other wines I have tasted from Mount Veeder. And this makes sense, because to visit the property is to grasp how remote this side of the mountain is, and although this and other vineyards around it have long been in production, until now the fruit has been sold to large wineries and blended away in Napa Valley AVA wines. Currently, the wines are made at a winery facility up on Howell Mountain, one that I have visited and at which I witnessed the 2016 vintage in production. Tesseron’s number-one demand of a temporary facility to produce his first Napa wine was simple: absolute control. Here he has it, at least until his winery on Mount Veeder has been completed (currently in the planning stages). Thomas Comme, the son of Jean-Michel Comme, the winemaker at Chateau Pontet-Canet, is winemaker and has lived at the estate since 2016. This first 2016 vintage is truly exciting—a sympathetically crafted, evocative expression of this place that is a must-try for readers who are as passionate as I am in discovering another unique expression of this incredibly multifaceted region for the highest quality Bordeaux blends."
