seit einigen Jahren bereits wird MASSIMO DI COSTANZO als Geheimtipp aus dem Napa Valley gehandelt. Die 2018er Serie ist ein Meilenstein bei Di Costanzo. VINOUS ANTONIO GALLONI, der Massimos Arbeit schon einige Jahre sehr schätzt, ist von den 2018er Weinen total begeistert: „MASSIMO AND ERIN DI COSTANZO CONTINUE TO MAKE SOME OF THE MOST STRIKING CABERNETS IN NAPA VALLEY. The entry-level DI CO Cabernet is a fabulous value, while the single vineyard wines highlight three of the best sites in Napa Valley. The 2018s have turned out as well as I had thought they would. Auch immer mehr andere Verkoster schätzen die Weine von Massimo und bewerten die Weine sehr hoch. Im WINE ENTHUSIAST Magazine wurden Massimos 2018er Weine sehr hoch bewertet. Zudem wurde Massimo selbst in die Liste „40 Under 40 Tastemakers“ gewählt:
„CABERNET KING - A native Californian, Di Costanzo worked at wineries around the world and for several Napa Valley icons. That included a stint as assistant winemaker to Andy Erickson at Screaming Eagle before he broke out on his own with Di Costanzo Wines. With his first commercial vintage in 2010, Di Costanzo crafts Cabernet Sauvignons that are classic in approach and restrained to delicious effect. Am Stil hat Massimo jahrelang gefeilt, seine Lehrjahre auf der ganzen Welt und unter anderem auch auf bei Andy Erickson auf SCREAMING EAGLE und bei Philippe Melka, waren da sicherlich hilfreich. Weine die zeitlos sind, klassisch, alterungsfähig, lebendig, präzise, komplex, terroirbetont, jahrgangstypisch, elegant, mit purer und reiner Frucht. Das erreicht er durch Lese bei moderaten Zuckergraden, minimale Eingriffe im Keller, Gärung in kleinen Edelstahl Behältern, Ausbau in Großteils nicht neuen, französischen Eichenfässern, Abfüllung ohne Schönung und Filtration, keine Mikro-Oxidation, keine Umkehrosmose oder andere manipulative Eingriffe!

Nachdem Übersee Transporte im Moment weltweit sehr schwierig sind, kam es zu einigen Verzögerungen. Wir sind daher sehr froh, dass die Weine diese Woche gut in unserem Lager angekommen sind. Notitzen des Weingutes: The Farella Vineyard in Coombsville is the birthplace of Di Costanzo. The 26 acre vineyard benefits from its west-facing, volcanic hillsides bathed in warm, afternoon sun, making it amongst the warmest sites in the traditionally temperate appellation. The vineyard, composed of red gravelly tufa, sits on a base of volcanic ash and is farmed meticulously and sustainably by the Farella family. The Farella Vineyard has been in production since the late 1970s and has the oldest known Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Coombsville. All of these characteristics combine to create the ideal conditions for an estate wine of proven longevity, purity, and place.

In the glass, the Di Costanzo Caldwell Vineyard Cabernet displays a shimmering, crystalline, ruby color. It’s immediately recognizable as classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Crunchy cranberry and raspberry tea on the palate are supported by a warming kirsch note. Tannins are fine-grained. Seither optimiert Massimo die Arbeit im Weinberg, beispielsweise hat er einen zweiten Drahtrahmen eingezogen um zusätzliche Strecker befestigen zu können. Das wird auch in den nächsten ein/zwei Jahren noch so bleiben. Der 2016er DICO ist im Moment einer meiner Lieblingsweine, sofort nach dem Öffnen liefert er ab! Offen, direkt ansprechend, tolle Frucht, samtene Tannine, mittlere Säure, herrlich balanciert und sehr harmonisch, mundwässernd, kraftvoll und frisch zu gleich, versprüht Lebensfreude, langer Abgang!“

His wine shows why Coombsville, tucked in Napa’s southeast corner and cooled by breezes from San Pablo Bay, is now one of the valley’s most fascinating appellations. Di Costanzo fell in love specifically with the volcanic soils of the 10,5 ha Farella Vineyard. Though his first commercial Cabernet release was 2010, he says 2013 was the first vintage that truly reflects the kind of refined, layered wines he wants to make. His route to his own label started with a viticulture and oenology degree at the UC Davis, then time in Italy at Tignanello and later in South Africa with rebel Adi Badenhorst. Back in Napa, he worked at Ovid and aged 26 became assistant winemaker at cult winery Screaming Eagle. ‘But the idea of making my own wines kept nagging at me,’ he says. ‘I had a hard time putting my soul into someone else’s wines.’ Quiet and intense, Di Constanzo managed to score enough grapes from the Farella Vineyard in 2010 for four barrels of a 100% Cabernet with the kind of minerality he prizes. By 2015 he was focusing on Di Costanzo full time, and in 2016 lined up the Rafael Vineyard at the base of Mt Veeder for a second Napa label, adding one in Sonoma for 2017. His goal is to achieve wine as an ‘art form’, and I’d say he’s on his way.“
