vor Weihnachten flatterten bei uns zunächst so einige Bestellungen für CHATEAU PONTET CANET Jahrgang 2014 herein, denn er wurde im Magazin VINUM mit der Höchstnote von 20 Punkten bedacht.

Kurz darauf stieg auch plötzlich die Nachfrage nach CHATEAU PONTET CANET 2012 und wir wussten zunächst nicht warum. Wie sich herausstellte wurde der 2012er von Dr. Jens Priewe im Magazin Der FEINSCHMECKER in seiner Liste der 50 besten Weine des Jahres empfohlen: "Das Château gegenüber von Mouton-Rothschild in Pauillac ist ein Star in Bordeaux. Umso erstaunlicher, dass der 2012er Pontet-Canet noch am Markt ist. Mich hat der 2012er umgehauen, als ich ihn vor drei Jahren das erste Mal trank. Grandios."

Zwischendurch wurde der 2012er schon knapp. Wir haben jetzt aber noch einmal einige 6er Kisten kaufen können und freuen uns Ihnen anbieten zu können:

- Höchstnote 20/20 Punkten Vinum, Bordeaux 2012 Primeur: "Pontet Canet hat erneut einen besonderen, geradezu metaphysischen Tropfen im Fass (und der Amphore), der keinem anderen Wein der Welt gleicht: sich langsam öffnende, eigenwillige Aromatik von Stein, schwarzen Beeren und Blumen, dicht und abgrundtief im Mund, mit Tannin unglaublicher Präsenz, die doch eigentlich massiv sind und doch von umwerfender Harmonie: Worte allein reichen nicht, die besondere Klasse dieses Weines zu erfassen. 2022-2040."
- 94-96 Punkte NEAL MARTIN auf erobertPARKER.com: "What is a primeur report without one of Pauillac’s most dynamic estate? I made the trip through the rain to taste their 2012. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot and 30% Merlot, the latter was cropped from 4th October and the Cabernet Sauvignon from 11th October, finishing six days later. The 50% of the crop once aged in new oak and one-year old barrels are now matured in concrete vats whilst 35% of the crop is aged in clay amphora quarried from their own vineyard. There is certainly great purity and terroir expression on the nose: blackberry, briary and background scents of fresh raspberry and cold stone. The definition is very impressive. The palate is interesting - quite different from the previous vintages. I love the tannins here – very fine but lending the Pontet-Canet great backbone It is utterly harmonious but I feel more understated, perhaps more controlled than recent vintages. The finish is much more introspective - a Pauillac politely informing you to go away and wait before bottling before making any judgement! This is a divine Pontet Canet - very succinct. Tasted April 2013."

Aktuell können wir eine sehr umfangreiche Auswahl von Chateau Pontet Canet Jahrgängen offerieren. Bereits verfügbar ist auch der großartige Jahrgang 2018. Er ist besonders rar, da zwei Drittel der potentiellen Ernte Mehltau-Befall zum Opfer fielen. Wenn man biologisch-dynamisch arbeitet, kann das in manchen Jahrgängen passieren:

Dichtverwobener, vielschichtiger, cremiger, fein opulenter, burgundischer Gaumen mit fein konzentrierter, cremiger Struktur, sehr viel feinem Tannin, süsser, super Aromatik, kräftiger, feiner Frucht, sehr langer, aromatischer, frischer Abgang mit vielen Rückaromen. Ein völlig anderer Stil als die anderen grossen Weine vom Médoc, aber ein grossartiger Wein."
- 20 Punkte VINUM: "Besitzt diese unglaubliche Komplexität, Struktur und Tiefe, mit denen uns dieses Gut in den letzten Jahren verwöhnt hat, die schon fast transzendente Art, aber auch nie gekannte, schon fast überschwängliche Fruchtigkeit und Frische. Ein Drittel einer normalen Ernte, doch einmal mehr ein Wein, der sich jeder Bewertung entzieht."
- 97-99+ Punkte Robert Parkers WINE ADVOCATE, Lisa Perroti-Brown: "Very deep purple-black in color, the 2018 Pontet-Canet rocks up with fantastically expressive plum preserves, baked blueberries and crème de cassis notes with touches of Chinese five spice, potpourri, licorice and chocolate mint plus a hint of smoked meats. Full-bodied, rich, super-concentrated and decadent, it has a firm frame of wonderfully velvety tannins with bold freshness to back up the fruit, finishing very long and very spicy."

- 96-98 Punkte WINE ENTHUSIAST, Roger Voss: "Barrel Sample. This wine is densely textured in rich tannins and beautiful fruit. Flavors of black currant and blackberry are there along with the solid structure that will allow the wine to age. This biodynamic wine has low yields in 2018 because of mildew, but what has been made is impressive and long lasting."
- 96-99 Punkte VINOUS, Antonio Galloni: "The 2018 Pontet-Canet is a freak of nature. Dark, rich and explosive, the 2018 possesses off the charts richness and concentration, much of it coming from tiny yields of just ten hectoliters per hectare, or one third of a normal crop. The 2018 soars out of the glass with stunning aromatic intensity and depth. Black cherry, gravel, grilled herbs, leather, lavender and menthol stain the palate. Dense and hedonistically ripe, the 2018 is a stunningly beautiful wine. The grapes were crushed by hand. Because of the tiny yields, the entire production was vinified in Pontet-Canet's new smaller concrete vats. All winemaking was done manually, without the aid of external temperature control or electricity. The 2018 is aging in a combination of 55% new oak and 45% terra cotta amphora. Quite simply, I have never tasted anything like it."
- 99 Punkte FALSTAFF, Peter Moser: "Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, zarter Wasserrand. Floral unterlegte reife Herzkirschen, feines Waldbeerkonfit, ein Hauch von Minze und Edelholz. Komplex, engmaschig, feine Extraktsüße, reife, tragende Tannine, mineralisch und anhaftend, tolle Süße auch im Abgang, großer Länge, gebaut für viele Jahrzehnte."
- 96 Punkte DECANTER, Jane Anson: ”The concentration that comes from having yields of 12hl/ha is extremely clear - it makes it feel very Pauillac, again resembling as at Latour, a 2010 style in terms of its backbone and sense of hunkering down.
The fruit quality is dark and knitted, with a creamy texture if you give it a minute to settle, an obvious tannic structure and a menthol finish that lets in some juice, bramble and hedgerow pleasures. It’s clearly impressive, although I get just the slightest touch of over-concentration with hints of prune on the finish.
The small yields meant the entire process, from destemming to sorting, was done by hand (last year around 30% of the crop was treated in this way), then fermented in small 40L cement vats that had seen their first service for just part of the crop in 2017. There was huge amounts of hard work and stress to ensure that no dried grapes made it through, with no pumping over and only soft manual punch down to control extraction.
This is 100% 1st wine, same as it has been here for the past three years. 55% will be aged in new oak barrel, 45% in amphoras. Drinking Window 2026 – 2040"
- 96-98 Punkte JEB DUNNUCK: "Deeply colored, the 2018 Pontet-Canet checks in as a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot that was destemmed by hand, fermented all in concrete tanks (punch downs only) and is still aging 55% in new French oak and the balance in concrete amphoras. It's an incredibly rich, opulent, and plush Pontet-Canet that offers loads of black and blue fruits, licorice, crushed violets, and graphite aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, powerful, beautifully textured and layered, it's reminiscent of the magical 2009 with its rare mix of both hedonistic and intellectual pleasure. Unfortunately, the estate was decimated by mildew in the spring and lost a full two-thirds of their total production."
- 97-98 Punkte JAMES SUCKLING: "A bright and open young wine with polished and soft tannins that spread out and fold into the wine, becoming barely discernible, yet the feel and beauty of them frames the wine in a beautiful way. Love the fruit and purity."

PYM-RAE: Tesseron Estate im Napa Valley
Anfang 2016 kaufte die Familie Tesseron dieses Weingut hoch oben am Mount Veeder im kalifornischen Napa Valley vom legendären Hollywood Start Robin William. Dieser hat den Weinberg gut 30 Jahre davor anlegen lassen und benannte das Gut nach den mittleren Namen seiner ersten beiden Kinder: Pym Rae. Die biodynamische Arbeitsweise wurde nach der Übernahme durch die Familie Tesseron auch sofort eingeführt. Das Weingut wird geleitet von Thomas Comme, das ist der Sohn von Jean-Michel Comme, der technische Direktor auf Chateau Pontet Canet. Der etwa 8 ha Weinberg ist mit 75 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 18 % Merlot und 7 % Cabernet Franc bepflanzt. Die Produktion ist also ohnehin schon recht klein und davon gehen auch nur 5000 Flaschen in den Export, der Löwenanteil bleibt in den USA. Ich habe den Wein im Rahmen einer der En-Primeur Verkostungen in den letzten Jahren probieren können und war sehr begeistert. 2016 ist der erste Jahrgang von Pym Rae und es war zu erwarten, dass der Wein genial ist. Daher freuen wir uns auch sehr, dass wir uns einige 3er Kisten davon sichern konnten (Ankunft voraussichtlich im Dezember 2020).

- 98 Punkte JAMES SUCKLING: “This is the debut vintage of this wine from the esteemed Bordeaux owner, Alfred Tesseron, who bought the property in the Napa mountains in 2016. Aromas of plums, wet earth, fresh herbs and tobacco. Some green olives. Turns to blueberries and blackberries. Full-bodied, yet reserved and layered with chocolate, walnuts and plums. Firm yet polished tannins give a framed sense to the wine. Savory. Racy and beautifully structured, it’s extremely drinkable already. Real wine.”
- 97 Punkte Robert Parkers WINE ADVOCATE, Lisa Perrotti-Brown: “A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Pym-Rae displays a deep garnet-purple color and reveals wonderfully fragrant notes of candied violets, wilted roses, damp soil and black tea over a core of red and black currants, black cherries and warm blackberries plus touches of cigar box and camphor. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is evocatively singular, offering that rock-solid structure of mountain fruit, yet these are wonderfully ripe, silt-like tannins that beautifully support the elegant red and black fruit layers, finishing very long and very perfumed. 2020-2048.
This is the first vintage off this estate following the purchase of the old Robin Williams vineyard and house by Chateau Pontet-Canet proprietor Alfred Tesseron back in 2016. The estate includes just under 20 acres of mature Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), Merlot (18%) and Cabernet Franc (7%) vines, planted in 1990. Now officially dubbed “Pym-Rae,” in respect for the original name given to the vineyard by Robin Williams (Pym and Rae are the middle names of two of Williams’s children), the site is perched at an average altitude of 1,500 feet (500 meters) on Mount Veeder. This first vintage off this vineyard is nothing like other wines I have tasted from Mount Veeder. And this makes sense, because to visit the property is to grasp how remote this side of the mountain is, and although this and other vineyards around it have long been in production, until now the fruit has been sold to large wineries and blended away in Napa Valley AVA wines. Currently, the wines are made at a winery facility up on Howell Mountain, one that I have visited and at which I witnessed the 2016 vintage in production. Tesseron’s number-one demand of a temporary facility to produce his first Napa wine was simple: absolute control. Here he has it, at least until his winery on Mount Veeder has been completed (currently in the planning stages). Thomas Comme, the son of Jean-Michel Comme, the winemaker at Chateau Pontet-Canet, is winemaker and has lived at the estate since 2016. This first 2016 vintage is truly exciting—a sympathetically crafted, evocative expression of this place that is a must-try for readers who are as passionate as I am in discovering another unique expression of this incredibly multifaceted region for the highest quality Bordeaux blends."
