Lieber Max Mustermann,

vor kurzem haben wir zu Hause nach längerer Zeit mal wieder ein gutes Stück Rindfleisch von unserem örtlichen Bauern des Vertrauens gebraten. Dazu musste es ein toller Cabernet sein! Meine Frau trinkt nur hin und wieder mal gerne Rotwein, aber bei diesem Wein meinte sie erfreut: „Wow! Der ist aber gut – was ist denn das?“ Es war:

MASSIMO DI COSTANZO CABERNET SAUVIGNON FARELLA VINEYARD 2016!

Nur 250 Kisten wurden von diesem Wein im Top-Jahrgang 2016 von Massimo Di Costanzo – vom Wine Enthusiast 2018 als „CABERNET KING“ bezeichnet, produziert. Die Trauben stammen aus dem Farella Vineyard aus dem etwas kühleren Gebiet Coombsville, das ist eher im südlichen Bereich des Napa Valley Nahe der Stadt Napa, wo die kühlen Einflüsse aus der Bucht von San Francisco noch stärkeren Effekt haben als weiter nördlich im Tal. Das kann man sehr gut erschmecken, denn der Wein hat nicht nur eine traumhaft attraktive Frucht, sondern auch eine lebendige Frische, eine Vitalität, eine mundwässernde Art und perfekte Tannine. Bei diesem Wein, so habe ich über die Jahre festgestellt, schwingt immer eine erfrischende Eukalyptus-Menthol Note mit, die Weine haben Energie und Spannung, sind nie plump oder marmeladig, ganz im Gegenteil! Dieser Stil wird auch Bordeaux Liebhaber gefallen – in eine Blindprobe als Pirat würde er auch sehr gut passen!

Wenn Sie die Weine von Dunn, Corison, Dominus, Forman oder Togni lieben, werden Sie auch Massimo Di Costanzo’s Cabernet bestimmt mögen. Am Stil hat Massimo jahrelang gefeilt, seine Lehrjahre auf der ganzen Welt und unter anderem auch auf bei Andy Erickson auf SCREAMING EAGLE und bei Philippe Melka, waren da sicherlich hilfreich. Sollten Sie noch einen besonderen, individuellen Rotwein für die Feiertage oder ein schönes Geschenk (tolles Etikett) suchen, hiermit sind Sie perfekt bedient!

Ebenfalls interessant: Auf cellartracker.com, eine für mich recht aussagekräftige Plattform wo Weinliebhaber direkt Weine bewerten können, wird der Wein mit einer Durchschnittsbewertung von 94,7 Punkten geführt. Das ist in diesem Forum enorm hoch - Höher bewertet als beispielsweise die 2016er von: Dunn, Corison, Philipp Togni, Opus One oder Mondavi Reserve!

Dusty mineral components ride beneath a core of black currant and olive, the tannin and oak profile measured and well-integrated, leaving ample room for classic elegance and structure to speak.“

Then the rich, but finely nuanced palate slowly opens up its spicy secrets. There’s a ton of tannins in here, but they’re beautifully crafted and give the wine serious complexity. Then, the hint of bitterness at the finish adds even more vitality. Try to wait until at least 2021.“

This savoury wine explodes with soft red berries and hints of rosemary and incense, rounded out with a freshly shaved pencil aroma and velvety tannins. Elegant and finessed. Großartige, intensive Farbe, herrlicher, intensiver, attraktiver Duft; druckvoll am Gaumen, voller Energie und Spannung, mundwässernd, toller Zug, lebendig mineralisch, komplex und lang. Ich freue mich, dass eine Linie zu erkennen ist und dass der Wein wieder so toll ist. Top!“

Inky, deep and luscious, with superb density and purity of fruit, the 2016 is impressive. Crème de cassis, lavender, plums, licorice and violet all develop in this intense wine. Today, the 2016 is big and also a touch monolithic. It will be interesting to see where Di Costanzo takes this wine as he gains more control of farming.

- Tipp Josef Schreiblehner (Juni 2019): „Der Rafael Vineyard befindet sich auf der westlichen Tal Seite im Oak Knoll District und er ist sehr steil, zum Teil sogar in Terrassen angelegt. Man hat hier einen tollen Blick über die Stadt Napa. Der Boden ist sandig und hell, auch Muscheln und viele Steine kommen zum Vorschein. 2016 hat Massimo erstmals Trauben aus diesem Weinberg mit großem Potential bekommen. Seither optimiert Massimo die Arbeit im Weinberg, beispielsweise hat er einen zweiten Drahtrahmen eingezogen um zusätzliche Strecker befestigen zu können. Er strebt einen etwas höheren Grundertrag an. Das verzögert die Reifung und hält den potentiellen Alkohol in den Beeren niedriger.
Erfreulicherweise bringt Massimo diesen Wein im Moment noch zu einem 40 % günstigeres Preis als den Farella auf den Markt bringt, unter dem Label DiCo. Das wird auch in den nächsten ein/zwei Jahren noch so bleiben. Der 2016er DICO ist im Moment einer meiner Lieblingsweine, sofort nach dem Öffnen liefert er ab! Offen, direkt ansprechend, tolle Frucht, samtene Tannine, mittlere Säure, herrlich balanciert und sehr harmonisch, mundwässernd, kraftvoll und frisch zu gleich, versprüht Lebensfreude, langer Abgang!“

Di Costanzo fell in love specifically with the volcanic soils of the 10,5 ha Farella Vineyard. Though his first commercial Cabernet release was 2010, he says 2013 was the first vintage that truly reflects the kind of refined, layered wines he wants to make. His route to his own label started with a viticulture and oenology degree at the UC Davis, then time in Italy at Tignanello and later in South Africa with rebel Adi Badenhorst.
