eines meiner Lieblings-Weingüter aus Bordeaux und Pessac Leognan ist DOMAINE DE CHEVALIER! Die Weine dieses hervorragenden Gutes haben eine Tiefgründigkeit, Subtilität, Eleganz und Komplexität, sie sind kraftvoll und doch fein, klassisch, eher mittelgewichtig und deutlich mineralisch geprägt.

Dass dieses Ausnahme-Weingut in einem großen Jahrgang wie 2016 einen großartigen Wein zustande bringt, ist zu erwarten. Doch dieser 2016er DOMAINE DE CHEVALIER übertrifft sogar die hohen Erwartungen:

- 97 Punkte VINOUS, Antonio Galloni: "The 2016 Domaine de Chevalier is a thrilling wine. Dense and beautifully layered, the 2016 is also quite a bit richer than it usually is. Cabernet Sauvignon aromatics and structure pulse through the wine. The red-toned fruit is incredibly primary at this stage. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2016 for at least a handful of years. It has been nothing short of magnificent on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. 2026-2066."

- 97 Punkte JEB DUNNUCK: "As to the reds, the 2016 Domaine de Chevalier is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc that saw an extended maceration, malo in barrel, and 18 months in just 35% new French oak. This deep purple-hued beauty boasts a powerful bouquet of tobacco smoke, damp earth, gravelly, rocky minerality, wood smoke, and loads of dark fruits. Full-bodied, deep, concentrated yet incredibly elegant and seamless on the palate, it’s A LEGENDARY CHEVALIER in the making. While I rated this as high as 99 points on one of the four separate occasions I was able to taste it, I’m being conservative with the score. it has some upfront charm but needs 4-5 years of cellaring and will keep for 3-4 decades."

It offers a very sleek and powerful array of ripe dark fruit and a very plush, focused and elegant bed of fresh, fine and powerful tannins. Plenty of aging potential, this is still quite tight. A blend of 55 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 35 per cent merlot, five per cent cabernet franc and five per cent petit verdot. Try from 2024."

On the palate, there are layers of elegant, silky textured fruits with sweetness, purity and richness. The finish keeps on going. The wine here is known for aging, so give it 12 years or more before opening a bottle and drink over the next 20-25 years, at least! There is no doubt, this is the finest vintage of Domaine de Chevalier Rouge ever produced, although the 2018 could be even better in the years to come!"

Composed of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc this opes to inviting aromas of ripe black berries and red currants which are woven together with Asian spices, spring florals, tobacco and wet stones all taking shape. On the palate this possesses a medium-full body with excellent overall balance. It continues to impress as it shows wonderful depth and complexity, backed by huge, well-polished tannins which provide plenty of structure through the long finish. While this is showing flashes of brilliance in its youth, it will ultimately require some time before it hits its stride. Given its quality year after year, THIS REMAINS ONE OF THE BEST VALUES IN ALL OF BORDEAUX. 2023-2043.“

Ausgewogener, dichtverwobener, duftiger, eleganter Gaumen mit viel gutem Tannin, kräftiger, süsser Frucht, dichter Aromatik, eleganter Struktur, sehr langer, aromatischer Abgang."

- 96 Punkte und "Cellar Selection" WINE ENTHUSIAST, Roger Voss: "This elegant wine wears its firm tannic structure lightly. It is densely textured, just starting on its road to maturity. Black-plum and berry fruits give the wine its weight as much as the tannins. It will age well over many years. Drink from 2026."

- 96 Punkte WINESPECTATOR, James Molesworth: "The core of fruit flavor here is sappy and dense, with lots of kirsch, raspberry pâte de fruit and plum reduction notes, yet this stays fresh and racy overall, with a bright iron spine, flashes of tea and tobacco and a long finish that shows a wonderful infusion of alder and tobacco flavors. Offers a lovely combination of prodigious fruit details, with a tug of earth. Best from 2024 through 2038."

- 96 Punkte DECANTER, Jane Anson: "The nose is a little less open at this stage than some of the others, but it’s clearly hiding layers of complexity. Chevalier suits a year like 2016, when the fruit was able to take its time to ripen. It's notably more tannic than most of the other wines in the line up, and will take its time to come round. It has brooding cassis and blackberry fruit, firm tannins and touches of tobacco and smoked sarments. There's no question that this will age well. Drinking Window 2025 – 2042"

- 17,5 Punkte JANCIS ROBINSON, Julia Harding: "Deep purple-rimmed crimson. Intense aroma that is very pure cassis and cassis leaf – but fully ripe – and just a hint of oak sweetness, and a hint of something more wild like elderberry. Gorgeous on the palate, richly fruited, rounded, deep and perfectly balanced for a long life but relatively early approachability."

Domaine de Chevalier ist seit 1983 in Besitz der Familie Bernard. Der charismatische Olivier Bernard leitet höchst erfolgreich die Geschicke des Gutes und war bis vor kurzem auch gleichzeitig Presidente der Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux (UGC).

Die 50 ha Rebfläche liegt auf einer Lichtung mitten in einem Wald, der die Reben vor extremen Temperaturen schützt. Olivier Bernard: “Only a great terroir can produce a great wine… I often start out with these words when speaking about Domaine de Chevalier. They convey our fundamental philosophy, not only with regard to viticulture, but also the spirit that pervades the estate, and the men and women who work here. They improve their already considerable skills year after year on behalf of that which is most essential to a fine wine in my opinion – BALANCE.”

Die Rebfläche verteilt sich auf 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Vergoren wird in Edelstahl, danach reift der Wein für 18 Monate in Eichenfässern (35% neu).

DOMAINE DE CHEVALIER BLANC
Der Weißwein von Domaine de Chevalier ist eigentlich noch berühmter als der Rotwein. Er stammt von 5 Hektar Rebflächen, die zu 70% mit Sauvignon Blanc und zu 30% mit Semillon bestockt sind. Er wird in Eichenfässern (35% neu) vergoren und reift dort auf der Hefe über 18 Monate, es werden 18.000 Flaschen erzeugt.

DOMAINE DE LA SOLITUDE – Pessac Leognan

Dieses Anwesen hat eine lange Geschichte und gehört der Kirche. Seit 1993 werden die Weingärten von der Familie Bernard bewirtschaftet, die hier seither viel Zeit und Geld investiert hat. Das Terroir ist exzellent und ähnelt jenem von Domaine de Chevalier. Die Rebfläche beträgt 40 ha, davon sind auch auch 8 ha Weißweine. Bei den Rotweinen lautet der Rebsortenspiegel 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc und 4% Petit Verdot. Die Gärung erfolgt in Beton, der Ausbau für etwa ein Jahr in Barriques, ca. 25 % der Fässer sind neu. Die Weine der Domaine de la Solitude sind am Markt kaum zu finden.

CHATEAU LESPAULT MARTILLAC – Pessac Leognan

Familie Bernard bewirtschaftet auch Chateau Lespault Martillac, ein historisches Gut von dem aus man das Örtchen Martillac gut überblicken kann. Der Weinberg besteht aus 8 zusammenhängenden Hektar - zum Großteil mit roten Rebsorten bestockt (60% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Petit Verdot, 5% Malbec), ein Hektar steht unter weißen Rebsorten (80% Sauvignon Blanc und 20% Semillon). Der relativ hohe Merlot-Anteil trägt erheblich zum charmanten, saftigen, attraktiven Stil des Rotweines bei. Schön ist auch die besondere Flaschenform, die zum tollen Gesamtpaketes des Weines beiträgt.

Der Weinkeller wurde renoviert und auf einen zeitgemäßen Stand gebracht, wie das auch bei den berühmten Chateaux in Bordeaux üblich ist. So wird auch hier, wie bei der Domaine de Chevalier, der Rotwein für die ersten Monate auf der Hefe belassen, der Weißwein wird komplett in Eichenfässern vergoren.

CHATEAU LEOGNAN – Pessac Leognan

Das 6 ha Weingut Chateau Leognan liegt neben Domaine de Chevalier und wurde von Familie Bernard von Ende der 1980er bis 2007 gepachtet. Die Reben wurden 1989 neu bepflanzt (70 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 % Merlot) mit einer Planzdichte von 1000 Stöcken pro Hektar, was sonst nur bei Grand Cru Classés üblich ist. Die Trauben wurden stets für den Grand Vin von Domaine de Chevalier verwendet. 2007 wurde das Weingut von Familie Miecaze erworben. Die Reben waren in einem tollen Zustand, was man von den Gebäuden nicht behaupten konnte. Daher wurde fleißig renoviert und heute erstrahlen die Besitzungen in vollem Glanz. Auch die Weine sind ganz hervorragend und man kann hier von einem Geheim-Tipp sprechen.
