What I like about the new project is how it combines a completely distinct voice with a consistent sense of subtlety. California fruit can be loud and obvious. It is nearly always exuberant compared to its old-world companions. It needs a tender hand to coax out its more ethereal qualities and Bob is uncommonly adept at achieving this second layer of experience. THE FRUIT AND THE STRUCTURE OF THE SANTA BARBARA WINES ARE COMPLETELY DISTINCT.“
- JoS (verkostet im Februar 2018): „Anfangs etwas kräuterig und erdig in der Nase, dekantieren tut dem Wein sehr gut; trocken, im Antrunk zart mollig, schöne Frucht, dahinter kommt eine enorme Mineralität durch, nicht fett sondern auf der feinen Seite bleibend, legt mit Luft enorm zu, baut Körper auf, wird aber nie fett und behält stets eine gewisse Sehnigkeit, sehr angenehm, elegant am Gaumen, bleibt lange haften, fein, salzig-mineralisch, sehr langer Abgang. Baut im nächsten Schritt an Griffigkeit und Extrakt auf, speichelflussanregend, legt noch einmal an Körper und Druck; Bob Varner sprach von der tollen phenolischen Struktur, die ihm so wichtig ist. Jetzt verstehe ich, was er meint. Auch an den vier nachfolgenden Tagen nach dem Öffnen verkostet. Der Wein bleibt total stabil, ohne Anzeichen von Oxidation. Lang, frisch, speichelfluss, frisches Baguette, etwas Haselnuss, salziger Karamell, weiße Blüten, Mandeln und ein Hauch nicht zu reife Birne. Ich kann mir den Wein auch sehr gut als Speisebegleiter vorstellen, der einem edlen Fisch mit feiner Sauce genug Raum gibt. Zalto-Burgunderglas. Mindestens eine Stunde Dekantieren. Nicht zu kalt genießen, bei ca. 14 °C.“

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, pure and textural - displaying a touch more mid-palate ripeness than the 2014 rendition - and concludes with a long, saline finish. This is a characterful Chardonnay that represents terrific value.
The Santa Cruz Mountains' loss has been Santa Barbara's gain. Though Jim and Bob Varner no longer work with the grapes from the Spring Ridge vineyard that they planted and nurtured for two decades, their enthusiasm for wine and life is undiminished and they clearly relish the fresh challenges posed by viticulture and winemaking further south. Even better, their skill and attention to detail are more accessible than ever, as the Varner wines from Santa Barbara are incredibly keenly priced."

- INTERNATIONAL WINEREPORT: "This Pinot Noir is a lovely showing from Varner, the 33% clone 777 and 67% Pommard clone was sourced from two blocks of the Los Alamos vineyard and is where the vines are planted on gentle slopes in shallow, low vigor soils. It displays bright aromas of wild forrest berries along with a mix of dried spices and floral along with an earthy edge. On the palate this is beautifully structured and well balanced with a silky texture. This will still require some additional time in bottle to soften up and fully express itself. (Best 2018-2025)"

The new Santa Barbara project will benefit from Bob‘s experience filtered through his ever-engaged reflective imagination. I think we will see these wines continue to develop and increase in subtlety as the Varners perfect their understanding of the site.“

We offered its „sister“ wine, a Chardonnay from the nearby El Camino Vineyard, a little while back, which elicited similar shock and awe. This is truly exceptional stuff.
The Los Alamos vineyard is a landmark in Santa Barbara County (it was the site of the first Au Bon Climat winery in the early eighties), and has made a strong move toward sustainability in recent years under the stewardship of vineyard manager Tavo Acosta. The Varner Pinot was sourced from two blocks on the site with northeast/east exposures, and while this is a decidedly cool climate, which helps lengthen the growing season, there‘s still enough sunlight intensity in Santa Barbara to push Pinot Noir over the brink, if you‘re not careful. „You can go from just ripe to overripe in a day or two“, Varner remarked to us.

 The 2014 Los Alamos Vineyard Pinot Noir from Varner was crafted from 100% destemmed fruit and aged in French oak barrels, of which just 30% were new. It clocks in at just 13.2% alcohol and yet it?s plenty generous with the fruit. In the glass it‘s a translucent ruby moving to magenta at the rim, with aromatics that make you feel like you‘re walking through a redwood forest eating berries: there‘s some nice blackberry and black cherry interspersed with red currant, cranberry, forest floor, and a little dried herb savor. The wine has terrific crunch and energy - a pitch-perfect balance of fruit sweetness and mineral grip. It is an ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING CALIFORNIA PINOT NOIR, period (i.e., it‘s not just good „for the money“). It has all the makings of a by-the-case summer staple, bright and versatile and ready to go right out of the bottle - serve it at 60 degrees in Burgundy stems with some simply marinated tuna steaks off the grill (cooked rare!) and don‘t tell anyone what you paid for this wine. On second thought, do tell - this is a bargain worth bragging about.“
- JoS (verkostet im Februar 2018): „Helles Rubinrot, deutlich aufhellend am Rand; frische Nase, offen, Kirschen, Weichseln, Kräuter, frisches Baguette; trocken, mittlere Tanninstruktur, Schwarzkirschschalen, Weichseln, Cranberries, Kräuter, Minze, Menthol, Weißbrotkruste, ein wenig helle Röstaromen, etherisch-phenolische Anklänge, eine kleine Prise schwarzer Pfeffer; sehr mineralisch, sehr speichelflussanregend, mittelgewichtig, dennoch intensiv und mit Kraft, bleibt stets auf der frischeren Seite und mit Finesse, bleibt haften, verändert sich ständig, legt an Frucht und Körper zu, es blitzten immer wieder neue Facetten auf, sehr langer Abgang. Ein Wein der Kalifornien im Herzen trägt und dennoch eine europäische Erziehung genossen hat. Das ist ein toller, spannender Wein, das ist außer Frage. Ganz nebenbei ist er auch noch erstaunlich fair im Preis. Auch an den vier nachfolgenden Tagen nach dem Öffnen verkostet. Der Wein bleibt total stabil, ohne Anzeichen von Oxidation. Zalto-Burgunderglas. Mindestens eine Stunde Dekantieren. Bei ca. 16-18 °C.“
