- 93 Punkte VINOUS, Josh Raynolds: „Dark violet. Aromas of fresh cherry and dark berries, pungent flowers, exotic spices and incense. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering bitter cherry, blackberry and spicecake flavors that show fine definition and turn sweeter as the wine opens up. Finishes on a resonating floral note, with well-integrated tannins and strong, spicy tenacity.“

- 94-96 Punkte JEB DUNNUCK (4/2020): „Scheduled to be bottled in February of next year, the 2018 Patrina reveals a deep purple color as well as stunning red and black fruits, smoked meat, violets, and gamey, floral notes. Full-bodied, gorgeously textured, and flawlessly balanced, it's going to be a winner.“

- 95 Punkte JEB DUNNUCK (9/2021): „As to the 2018s, the 2018 Patrina is all Syrah and has a classic Alban, concentrated, full-bodied style as well as lots of black and blue fruits, notes of ground pepper, iodine and flowers, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. I always like to say this is a good introduction into the wines of John Alban, and while it is, it’s certainly much more than that as well and is a stunningly good, singular Syrah.

It’s always incredibly educational tasting through recent vintages with the Alban family, as well as one of the highlights of my year. John brings an incredible amount of knowledge and experience to the table. As with Guigal in the Northern Rhône, he favors a long, four-year élevage for his wines, and it’s such a treat to look at multiple vintages at the same time. Having said that, this estate is unique in its location, and while it does seem to track the overall vintage style of the Central Coast, that’s not always the case. Looking at the wines reviewed here, the 2017s were just bottled at the time of my visit, and I was able to taste them as pre-bottling samples at the estate and then later via shipped finished bottles in Colorado. While 2017 can be a challenging vintage throughout California due to heat, this estate handled the vintage beautifully, and the wines are rich, textured, and exotic. They’re already expressive and drinking nicely yet will benefit from just 2-4 years of bottle age to integrate some structure. They’ll be long lived and have broad drink windows. The 2018s come from a drought year, and the wines are concentrated, rich, and blockbuster styled, yet there’s a cooler, pure, fresh vibe in the aromatics, and I suspect these will need slightly more time in bottle. I was only able to taste a few 2019s and 2020s, so the majority of those reviews will wait until next year. As I’ve lamented in the past, it’s always been a mystery to me why no one else in the Edna Valley comes anywhere close to the quality that is routinely achieved by Alban.“

- Notizen des Weinguts: „Patrin is a Roma word for leaf and grass blades.  We wanted a romani association for this wine because it is not a wine from a ‘place’ so much as one shaped by us; our traditions and joys. The Roma have a very strong and romantic culture, but they are not tied to any particular location.

By mounding up patrin in specific configurations called Patrina, Romani mark secret trails that their comrades can follow to special gathering places.  Under the right circumstances, Patrina lead these kindred spirits to wonderful celebrations underscored by wine and song.

Our vineyards are a patchwork of isolated soil types that you may recognize as Reva, Lorraine, Seymour’s and Pandora (very much wines of a place).  Between and in route to these well healed sites are vineyards that are not so obviously distinct.  We have blended these disparate and ‘disenfranchised’ blocks into a single wine we call Patrina. Like the Romani trails from which Patrina derives its name, we hope these bottles lead you to some great merriment, or more.
While the grapes for Patrina are raised with the same detail and attentiveness as the rest of our vineyards, and then fermented open top with indigenous yeast, gentle pump overs and a few punch downs once soft, it is bottled unfined and unfiltered after ‘just’ 22 months in barrel to preserve its youthful exuberance.  All the density and concentration folks have come to expect from our reds with black and blue fruits, mineral notes, and flowers.“
