There is again fine concentration to the more tightly wound medium weight flavors that possess both fine volume and punch on the lingering finale. At present this isn't quite as complex as the Oligocène but that should progressively change with age. Recommended. Drink: 2026+
Producer note: Patrick Javillier was away from his 11 ha domaine at the time of my visit and it was his daughter Marion, and his son-in-law Pierre-Emmanuel Lamy (who is married to Marion's sister) that received me. Marion is responsible for the red wines and Lamy for the whites and the vineyard work, while Patrick remains ready to assist when and where necessary. The duo described 2019 as a "vintage that began poorly but ended well. The April 5th frost cost us a lot of potential yield and particularly so for the chardonnay. Then the flowering did not pass especially well so it was clear early on that 2019 would not be an abundant harvest. Add to this the heat and drought and you had yields that were comparable to those of 2016. The Les Monchenevoy was especially hard hit and it's remarkable that with a .70 ha holding that we couldn't harvest enough fruit to make a barrel! We began picking with the whites on the 6th of September and then continued with the reds. Potential alcohols ranged from 13 to 13.5% for the reds and between 13.5 and 14% for the whites. As to the wines, they're rich and powerful with excellent densities plus the terroir is wonderfully transparent." The 2019 whites were bottled between November 2020 and February 2021. I have noted before that Javillier and team rarely miss, and the 2019 whites are excellent across the board."
