- 18 Punkte Rene Gabriels, BX Total, Andre Kunz: "Samtenes, dichtes, kräftiges, cremiges Bouquet, schwarze Beeren, Cassis, Lakritze, Rauch, Graphit. Dichter, kraftvoller, aromatischer Gaumen mit kräftiger, dunkler Frucht, viel feinem Tannin, kräftiger, dunkler Aromatik, fein muskulöser Struktur, langer, samtener Abgang. 18/20 2027 - 2050."

- 92 Punkte, Parkers WINE ADVOCATE, William Kelley: „The 2020 Clos Manou has turned out brilliantly. Unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, plums, spices and licorice, it's medium to full-bodied, with a deep core of vibrant fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, violet-inflected finish. Seamlessly constructed, it's a terrific example of haute couture winemaking that would embarrass numerous classified growths. Drink Date: 2025-2055“
Stéphane Dief started Clos Manou in 1998, producing two barriques of wine from a 0.12-hectare parcel in Saint Christoly, some 15 kilometers to the north of Saint-Estèphe, "out where the buses don't run." Growing little by little over the years, he now owns 18.5 hectares of vineyards in morcellated parcels that encompass three essential terroirs: gravels (where Cabernet Sauvignon is planted), sand and clay-limestone (where Merlot is planted). In his acquisitions, Dief has always sought out high-density plantings, and when he replants, it's at 10,000 vines per hectare. Using massal selections from Bérillon, any missing vines are replaced, and the vineyards are cultivated below the rows with mowed grass left between. Shrugging off my compliments regarding their impeccable condition, Dief says that he considers his practices merely "normal viticulture"—even if these are norms that seldom obtain today, even among well-financed classified growths. Harvest is by hand, parcel by parcel, into small crates, with gentle, rather reductive vinification in more than 30 different vats, followed by vertical pressing and maturation that varies by variety, with Cabernet Sauvignon seeing some new oak and Merlot maturing in concrete. Today, as at so many addresses, extraction isn't pushed so hard and new oak's presence is more discreet. The results of Dief's exigent viticulture and thoughtful, precise, artisanal winemaking are consistently brilliant and deserve to be far better known.

- 92 Punkte, Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider: „A solid effort and one of the better wines from the far north of Bordeaux, the wine offers flowers, tobacco, herbs, cedar and currants. Round, fruity and soft, with a juicy, mouthful of sweet cassis on the mid-palate, this is good now, and will be even better with a few years of bottle age. Drink from 2024-2038.“

- 92 Punkte, VINOUS, Antonio Galloni: „The 2020 Clos Manou is an opulent, flamboyant wine, just as it was en primeur. A rush of black cherry jam, chocolate, new leather, spice and sweet oak saturates the palate. All the elements are so well-balanced in a 2020 that is irresistible, even now. Drinking Window: 2024-2035“

- 91 Punkte, DECANTER Georgina Hindle: „Deep and quite intense in terms of fruit concentration but the texture remains quite direct and linear, smooth and well integrated tannins with oak spicing that gives the palate edges and a frame. It does expand but keeps a tension to the elements, not yet settling and calming down. Just feels a bit young still. But I do love the blackcurrant fruit and the acidity that underpins the wine. Given time this will be very enjoyable. Drinking window: 2025-2036“

- 91 Punkte, JEB DUNNUCK: „Françoise and Stéphane Dief's 16.5 hectares of vines in the northern part of the Médoc were decimated in 2020 by frost, and their 2020 Clos Manou comes from dismal yields of just 26 hectoliters per hectare. The blend is 57% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc. It has an incredible sense of minerality and almost salinity to go with impressive red and black fruits, notes of smoked tobacco and flowers, medium to full body, and integrated acidity. It's clearly an outstanding wine that's going to offer loads of pleasure over the coming decade or so.“ 2023-2033

- 91 Punkte, James Suckling: „Raspberries, mulberries, maltesers and bay leaves here. Graphite, too. It’s medium-bodied, with fine-grained tannins. Excellent balance and freshness with a mineral finish. Better after 2025.“
