- 96 Punkte Robert Parkers WINE ADVOCATE, Stephan Reinhardt: "The 2014 Halenberg Riesling trocken GG is so clear and so discreet, but so herbal, yeasty and attractive that you fall in love with it straight from the very first impression. Monolithic on the palate, rich, intense and powerful, this is an enormously juicy and highly elegant, perfectly balanced Riesling from 45- to 50-year-old vines in a top terroir. This Halenberg is still untamed, but also precise and has a great substance and lingering salinity. 2016-2030.
"2014 wasn't a problematic vintage for us; we had perfect grapes until the end," says Tim Fröhlich, and looks like as if he felt a bit awkward. "We have steep and stony vineyards, so the water drains well." The rainfalls in the end of August were necessary because 2014 was a dry year. And although it also was an early year, Fröhlich wanted to pick his grapes late and physiological fully ripe and with ripe acidity levels. He started picking grapes for the estate Riesling October 4th, when many of his lesser well known colleagues had already finished their harvest. "90% of the grapes we picked were golden-yellow in color and just perfect. Even on our last harvest day, which was October 19th, the grapes in the Felseneck were shining. We picked everything in a very relaxed mood in 14 days because we did all the vineyard work before." The resulting wines are slightly lighter than in former years, but they are simply excellent even though they were picked with comparatively moderate must weights of 92°/93° Oechsle (which corresponds with 12.6% to 12.8% alcohol)--instead of 100° Oechsle for which Tim normally aims.
The six (!) Grosses Gewächs Rieslings were picked in four days, Kupfergrube and Felsenberg at the same day. The vineyards in Monzingen had less rain in the end of August, says Tim, so the total acidity is analytically lower than in Schlossböckelheim (relation 7.5 to eight grams per liter).
Due to old vines in top sites, Tim and his team managed to produce powerful, intense, precise Rieslings of great elegance and finesse, and with lovely moderate alcohol levels. Although I can't say today whether I like 2013 better than 2014 or vice versa, I recommend tasting both Schiefergestein and Vulkangestein to discover whether you like 2014 or not. These are beautifully clear dry Rieslings and among the very best you can buy at this price point outside of the Mosel. From here, you can decide whether to taste the grands crus from slate (Stromberg, Felseneck, Halenberg and Frühlingsplätzchen) or those from porphyry soils (Felsenberg and Kupfergrube).
