The 2012 Grüner Veltliner Senftenberger Gärtling is a rarity since it was only produced in 1993, 1999, 2006 and 2012. Sourced from low yielding 50+ years old vines this GV was hand-picked with not a single botryis berry but fermented for 15 months. The wine offers a clear and lovely aromatic nose of lychees, peaches and finest bedrock flavors. The palate is very rich indeed and makes me wish for Christmas time (I associate Dresdner Christstollen herewith which means almonds and marzipan as well as raisins, candied lemon peel, and powdered sugar). However, the taste of this full-bodied and intense wine is also piquant and very mineral so you never get the alcohol whereas the sugar is well buffered by the mineral taste and the rich extract. The potential of the Gärtling is huge but you do not have to wait – it's already digestible but will get even more complex in the next 15+ years. 2015-2040.
