Er wird mindestens drei Jahre auf der Hefe ausgebaut und mit 8 Gramm dosiert. Er zeigt gute Konzentration, reife Frucht, etwas gelbe Früchte, ist herrlich eindringlich. Er ist lebhaft und klar im Mund, kraftvoll und zupackend, besitzt gute Substanz und Struktur, feine Frische und Länge."

It’s surprisingly supple and approachable considering its base vintage, and also considering that it’s made entirely without malolactic. Its fragrant notes of strawberry and red cherry are pinned down by a lively structure, showing plenty of finesse, and they’re accented by subtle notes of chalk that persist on the elegant finish. This is excellent, and the finest version of this cuvée that I’ve tasted in a long time. Last tasted: 3/14."
The non-vintage Brut Réserve is always a blend of at least three different years, made from four-fifths pinot noir and one-fifth chardonnay, and can contain up to 50 percent reserve wines, depending on the base vintage. With its bold fruitiness and shapely elegance, it’s an excellent introduction to the Bara style.
Paul Bara’s champagnes are classic examples of Bouzy, with a full body and an ample, fruity ripeness thanks to pinot noir grown on the village’s warm, south-facing slopes. At the same time they demonstrate an unusual refinement and finesse, and despite the absence of malolactic, these champagnes are rarely aggressive - they tend to feel velvety in their depth of fruit and seamless in their integration of components from beginning to end.
All of Bara’s wines are pure Bouzy and 100-percent grand cru, since they own no other parcels."

This is an especially dense, muscular style, but there is no shortage of personality. I find this edition of the NV Brut Réserve Gran Cru compelling, even if the ripeness is a bit pushed. Notizen des Weinguts: Vineyard Paul Bara’s vineyard is located in Bouzy, a site classified as GRAND CRU (100%) in Champagne. The reputation of Bouzy emanates largely from its Pinot Noirs which are ripe, rich and very expressive. All of Bara’s fields face the South, providing perfect conditions for the ripening of the grapes across 30 of the foremost locations in Bouzy. With all of these exceptional conditions combined, the terroir of Bouzy is exemplified in the wines produced. The chalk present under our vineyard helps to drain the soil of excess water and gives the grapes necessary minerals. Tasting Notes As a symbol of the savoir-faire of our House, this non-vintage brut has a lovely clear, yellow color, accentuated by hints of old gold. The carbonation is fine and white, making lively, regular chains of bubbles. On the nose you will find aromas of ripe, fleshy fruit dominated by Mirabelle plums followed by spices and honey, punctuated by hints of candied fruit, bergamot and orange peel. In the mouth, fruitiness and freshness are lushly combined to produce a fullbodied wine reminiscent of ripe yellow peaches and just a touch of pepper. Food Pairing Aperitif, Celebration, Thaï Food, Scallops, Shrimp, Strawberry Shortcake, Apple Crumble Pie Paul Bara is a terrific source for rich, Pinot Noir-driven Champagnes that capture the essence of Bouzy, a village where wines marry fruit intensity with chalky minerality. I was especially taken with the 2012 Comtesse Marie de France, which takes all the signatures of Bouzy and then amplifies them through the natural radiance of the vintage. The wines are fermented in steel, with the exception of the Annonciade, which is done in barrel. Malolactic fermentation is inhibited. As good as the top cuvées are, the NV Champagnes offer plenty of the house’s distinctive style at more approachable prices.
