Leoville Poyferre

Der Ursprung des Chateaus geht zurück ins 17. Jahrhundert, als Leoville der größte Besitz im Medoc war, der über die Zeit und mit den Generationen in kleinere Besitztümer zerfiel. Seit 1840 gibt es Chateau Leoville Poyferre, das seit 1979 von Didier Cuvelier geleitet wird.

Die 80 Hektar Weinberge sind von Kies geprägt und zu 63% mit Cabernet Sauvignon, zu 25% mit Merlot, zu 7% mit Petit Verdot und zu 5% mit Cabernet Franc bestockt. Das Durchschnittsalter der Reben beträgt 38 Jahre.

Sobald die Trauben im Keller ankommen, werden sie zweimal sortiert: zuerst von Hand auf Tischen, bevor sie entrappt werden, dann ein zweites Mal mit einer optischen Sortiermaschine. Die Vinifikation erfolgt parzellen- und rebsortenrein in den 57 thermoregulierten Edelstahltanks, davon 27 doppelwandig. Diese 27 Tanks ermöglichen die Kaltmazerationen vor der Gärung, die im Allgemeinen etwa eine Woche dauert. Diese Technik verstärkt die Reinheit der Fruchtaromen und die Intensität der Farbe. Um dieses „rote Gold“ weiter zu schützen, hat das Chateau 2018 ein neues Bioschutzsystem eingeführt: Dem Most wird Nicht-Saccharomyces-Hefe zugesetzt, wodurch die traditionelle Verwendung von SO2 in dieser Phase eliminiert wird. Der Wein reift für 18 Monate in Fässern aus französischer Eiche.

Léoville Poyferré is undoubtedly one of them, and it is more than happy to play up its non-conformist image. It chose Michel Rolland as consultant in the mid-1980s (his second consultancy gig in the Médoc after the CVBG properties I believe), has always harvested on the later end of the scale and with lower yields than you normally find in the Médoc; usually 35hl/h compared to the usual 45hl/h.
It also blends at the end of ageing, rather than the beginning, and generally includes an unusually high proportion of Merlot compared to its neighbours, while also ensuring that malolactic fermentation takes place in new oak barrels. With all of this, you can expect a more voluptuous take on the St-Julien appellation at Poyferré. This is a wine that is not afraid to proclaim its pleasure in finding itself in the appellation, but nor is it constrained by its classification."
